I love complaining about this being weak and it’s still a 4 lol
Not throwing shade at all, this band is just fucking ridiculous, just shitting gold for 35 years now. I say that with complete confidence that whatever they have cooked up with this year will be up to their usual high standard.
My rating scale for Converge is fucked, I gave this a 4.5 but if it were any other band it’s a 5. I just feel like this record isn’t quite as good as Jane, YFM, or AWLWLB. And I still think Bloodmoon is fine. Probably their second worst just ahead of No Heroes (which is still insanely good)… I know we’re all starved for “regular” Converge but I’m kinda glad they got this out of their system, they clearly flirted with this sound on the title track here and Thousands of Miles Between Us, and personally I think they really refined it.
So not only do I expect regular batshit metalcore tunes, I think that whatever left turns into post and sludge metal will probably be even better than what’s here.
I fucking love this band so much.

¿por que no los dos?
Nah but really I feel almost the exact same about them. I think the guys in Converge are overall better songwriters, Kurt just has better riffs, and Jacob is a far better lyricist, but Greg’s vocal acrobatics are wild to hear and just the pure insanity of some of their songs is unmatched.
I think what sets both bands apart from most other “mathcore” (even if Converge has started to kind of move away from that a bit) bands is that they’re better at what I like to call controlled chaos. A big problem I have with even some of the most revered mathcore bands is that the guitar playing feels way too noodly and almost masturbatory and often the vocals just feel like they’re there for the sake of it. Converge and Dillinger both just feel like well oiled machines where every part is working perfectly in tandem. It might sound sloppy or incoherent to someone who isn’t down with it but to me they’re flat out the best musicians in heavy music.
Even nearly a decade after the split Dillinger is still so beloved, I think just that really speaks for how good they were.

for sure wildcard, their songs are more controlled, they can put catchy and groovy stuff in songs that still retain the mathcore chaotics.

Did you hear what sounded like a bit of a new song posted on IG with Ben drumming? I thought it might have been that Cyberpunk song but I think it's new new. Sounded very industrial noise ish

I think the other new song is better. Both were pretty solid, and I’m sure I’ll like them more once I hear the record, but the second new track was a little more engaging imo

Oh and that Detroit show had such an insane lineup. Cloud Rat, Harms Way, The Armed and Converge plus a couple others. Crazy lucky for them

Exciting to hear new material. Band have never really done any wrong throughout their entire career.

Do the new songs just sound like them doing them by the numbers? I'm sure they'll sound better in the context of the record with a proper production job and what not but the riffing and structures aren't wowing me so far.

That’s always how I’ve felt about bands playing songs before they drop the actual recording. I think there’s maybe been one or two times where that’s happened that I’ve actually been into it. Sure there’s like the novelty or whatever of being some of the first people to ever hear new music and that’s kinda cool… but ngl I’d much rather they have played like Heartless or Drop Out or something, hell, they’ve barely touched a few of these tracks live. Outside of that Roadburn set I don’t think they’ve ever played Wildlife, Murk and Marrow, Trigger, or Thousands of Miles Between Us live. Those first two especially would’ve been sick.

I've definitely heard bands play new songs in live vids and thought they ripped. Just not hearing anything that they haven't done much better in some other song.
