i've never had a huge issue with the production or mixing. it's not great but it doesn't ruin the album for me.

i guess i'm the big contrarian in that my favorite aspect of this album IS the production. so dry and evil

run a modded mesa boogie pre into a jcm 800 power section

there are even pictures floating around online with the knobs dialed in during the sessions

Yea, I've also read that remixing this album is difficult because the songs were recorded and then edited together a ridiculous amount on analog tape and it would take a ton of effort to get everything together to do it. There's also fear that because of the hundreds of edits the tape might have degraded.

On the other hand, it's fucking Metallica, they could easily afford anyone they wanted to remix this.

i'm not nearly the biggest fan of this album but i grew up with it and would hate any remix. the sound is so unique and perfect

i heard that bass remix that was floating around some years back and it just ruined the atmosphere for me. hated it

What's James using now? Mesa? Diezel? Fractal?

There's some contract obligation bs though. Like he'll have a wall of Mesas for display on stage, but could actually just be plugged into a Diezel or Fractal. I hear shit about that all the time.

I think there’s a YouTube video were some dude boosted the bass for the album, I dunno if anyone has mentioned that yet. It’s not perfect, but it’s decent.

Oh it’s still great as is, but a separate remastered version wouldn’t hurt. It’s not out of the cards since they did those expanded box set vinyls for the first 3 releases.

Metallica's best album, easily. I think the strange production actually helps the feel of the songs, because they don't sound nearly as good with any of the live tunings they've used since the initial tour.
