I've always felt like this album nods towards doom metal and post-metal more than anything else, and tones down the folk influences that are so dominant on Pale Folklore and The Mantle.

Pale Folklore is mostly black metal as well, but people don't bitch about that album.

PF = TM > Ashes

I think I may have pinpoint my main gripe with this; I feel this album is extremely reminiscent of the stuff you find in the cascadian scene (which dont get me wrong I dig the ever-loving hell out of). Basically its the masters take on a new scene which they had a hand in creating as a matter in fact. While its great stuff, I feel it isnt exactly the signature agalloch balance folk and BM. Regardless this is a borderline 4 imo.

while its far from my favorite ags, this is still brilliant. it does a really solid job of combining elements from the mantle and ashes nearly seamlessly; while the sheer impact of the compositions on those albums is more effective (especially on an emotional level), this implements enough new things like the violins and very slow builds that make it still worthwhile
