I think it's a fitting closer

Idk it doesn’t work for me when they put his vocals at the forefront instead of blending them with a big cloud of sound

There's other songs on the album like that (Altogether, 40 Days), it's not out of place. What you're describing sounds more MBV. It may be an acoustic cut but it's still distinctly Slowdive.

I think Dagger is p concertedly out of place tbh, pretty unexpected closer but I think it's cogent. This is basically a heartbreak album and I kinda admire that he can come out with those lyrics straight-up instead of letting the gazehaze swallow that sentiment. Not without a bit of emo cringeboi potential, but I think the more immersive dreamy stuff carries enough subtext for that kind of explication to check out ok
That said, I can vibe not vibing with it as much. Doesn't exactly cater to the same aesthetic as the rest

‘This album really deserves something better than Dagger to close it out though‘
Dagger is one of my faves actually, although the version I’ve heard doesn’t have it as the closer.

When you have an album that so thoroughly conveys the feeling of heartbreak and loss through textures and and soundscapes, it's a bold choice to have the final track act as a foil to the previous nine songs. It works very well and makes for a very memorable closer.

What do you define as the closer? I assumed for many years the extended edition was the full album so I always thought Country Rain was the closer, which ends on a really sweet melancholic note

"I kinda admire that he can come out with those lyrics straight-up instead of letting the gazehaze swallow that sentiment."
I think if a sentiment is remotely sad it should always be drowned in gazehaze

i think dagger is perfectly fine melodically, i'm sure neil and eno both were like "more layers? nah"
it also imo is sibling songs with here she comes and somewhat exists to simply make that song look better ....

That’s interesting @Choccy because “Dagger” just such a sense of finality to it it’s hard for me to imagine anything following it.

for the longest time I thought Fortunate Son was the final track because my friend ripped me a CD of this but he must've fucked it up

I was watching Fantano's review of their self-titled and I have to agree with him, it didn't caught my attention like the previous 3 albums. Even pygmalion that the use of echoes in the songs get annoying AF, and still they are enjoyable songs.

Plus I don't usually trust in self-titled albums. Except some cases like deftones, duran duran and korn.

I watched that review once when I could still stomach his videos and from what I remember it was "waah they turned into a dream pop band"

Pygmalion is one of the best albums ever written, the s/t is pretty good as well...
you mean the E.P. right? Oh, that s/t? Maybe not then.
