Pantera has been among my favorite bands since I really got into music in like 05 - ive learnt (and forgotten) most their tracks on guitar, read Rex' book on Pantera, watched hundreds of their live videos idk they just hit the spot for me and I couldn't give a flying fuck what Sputnik has to say about them. Exhorder is a different beast though and yeah this album is probably better than anything Pantera ever did and the same goes for NOLA.

Pantera was probably one of my stepping stones for more extreme metal along with Slayer.

and Anselmo- controversial as he may be hes always had a huge affinity for more extreme and underground metal (I couldn't see Hetfield or Mustaine wearing Deicide or Mayhem shirts in their band shoots) plus I read in an interrview with Kyle that Phil helped to spread Exhorders Demo and get them recognized by a major label (pretty sure this was before Pantera had even got signed to Atco too), not to mention he always made sure to bring relatively new or less mainstream acts on tour with them (Eyehategod, crowbar, neurosis, deftones etc) to help give them a kick start in their careers. Plus his played in every type of band ranging from southern country to legit black metal projects in which he went under a different name. Say what you will about him as a person but his done a hell of a lot for metal over the decades.

Phil is cool yeah.

Metal is an incestuous genre, bands are influenced by other bands all the time and bands try to push the boundaries of what other bands have already done. I think Pantera may have took the Exhorder sound and expanded it in their own way. Comparisons aside; great bands, great albums.

if by expand you mean watered down into a boring chugfest for white trash to mosh to, sure
and no, pantera have exactly 1 great album and everything else they've done is mediocre at best

Pantera were tight , Exhorder were a little tighter.
Pantera were a little more accessible and kitschy perhaps but still had all the elements of a great band and have some classic tunes. They also never opted to play thrash so it seems asinine to compare them to Exhorder, when they were in fact the ones who altered their style to emulate Pantera on The Law. So both influenced eachother in many ways
