If you love these two then go for Leviathan. Because Blood and Thunder is a typical Leviathan song while Colony of Birchmen is not that representative of what Blood Mountain is. It is closer to Crack the Skye actually (which is highly recommended btw)

superb album, easily one of my fav albums. Whenever i jam out on the drums, this album is what i jam out to..that and other mastodon songs. both brent and bill arn't really going that techinical in this album, more along the lines of providing rhythm for brann but still the riff's that they make are certainly original. And Brann being Brann is just amazing. Easily my drumming idol, his style influnences the way i play..though i'm not as good as he is lol....

Hmm. I love Crack the Skye and am thoroughly enjoying this. I'll up my rating later.
I think for anybody getting into Mastodon only because of Crack the Skye, it's best to work backwards. Because this album is definitely the much needed bridge to Leviathon that I needed.

I recently got introduced to Mastodon through Crack the Skye and found it difficult to listen to any of their older work. After constant listening, I am finally enjoying their older albums......just one of those bands you have to let "grow" on you

I'm not sure whether I like this better than Crack The Skye or not. I think the problem with Crack The Skye is that it is such a different album for Mastodon, it's truly hard to compare it to their more sludgy stuff.
