Very excited to dig into this soon. Best 'metalcore' outfit I've listened to thus far (though I am admittedly far from a metalcore connoisseur). High praise preceding indicates I am in for a treat.

My first impression of this record is indeed largely positive. The record is certainly largely well-composed, tightly performed, excellently produced, with periodically stanky riffs, but I do feel that this record does not break much ground sonically or conceptually relative to the band's earlier output, nor does it match the intense edge of the band's most renowned earlier output. It feels comparatively tame, with many songs leaving only a minimal impression on me (if largely positive).

Might come back to it sometime later to see whether my impression changes. Still, Converge is a band that has very impressive baseline in terms of the quality of their musical output. One of the few bands that more or less never releases a record that is not above-average (with the exception of their earliest output).

Liking this, not their most adventurous but very tight and less lumbering and excessive than some of their earlier work. Drum production is especially nice and less boomy than a lot of ballou's other stuff

I agree with Memento and Demon. Like I really like this but it pales to their older material for me

I mean, I do understand it not being for everyone. I do think it is among their best stuff easily though.

Pales in comparison is right I think, especially in relation to Jane Doe and Axe to Fall (their masterpieces in my view). I also prefer All We Love We Leave Behind and Fail Me above this for sure.

I'd take You Fail Me, Jane Doe and All We Love ahead of this, but that's it. I love Axe to Fall, but it's not top-tier Converge for me tbh.

Agree to disagree, Axe to Fall has a special place in my heart (hits like a truck affectively, including especially those two slow-burning closers). In any case, even the naysayers are still rating this positively (that tells you something).
