I never once had that vibe the 50+ times I’ve heard the song, flow is smooth

The biggest curveball of my DT rankings is that ADToE is in my top 5 albums of theirs (at #5, in fact). With the exception of Build Me Up, Break Me Down and Beneath the Surface (which are two of the shortest songs anyway), every other track is at least a 4/5 for me. And the four epics are all among my favorite modern DT tracks (with Breaking All Illusions being one of my favorites of any era of DT)

Yes!
I guess I’m a sucker for the record because I even like Beneath The Surface whereas most fans probably don’t care for that song

What do y’all think of Systematic Chaos? I’ve been working on discog for past few months and I’m finishing SC, moving onto Black Clouds, but I’m very conflicted. I think I like Systematic Chaos, but also the first where I’m questioning if it’s dumb

@Titan: Far From Heaven/Breaking All Illusions is still one of my favorite moments of DT's entire discog, especially in the way the two mirror each other like Wait for Sleep/Learning to Live. And is it any coincidence that Myung was the lead writer on both Breaking All Illusions and Learning to Live? I think not
One of the best things about the Mangini era is that the band finally gave Myung more room to contribute and showcase his skills again, as he was gradually becoming more and more invisible during the mid-late 2000s (mostly courtesy of Portnoy, from what I understand). Thankfully it seems like Portnoy has mellowed out and tempered his ego these days, so hopefully some of his worst artistic impulses aren't tapped into for future DT projects. Parasomnia definitely gives me hope in that regard though

@Veldin: this might be a controversial take, but 2003-2009 is actually my least favorite era of DT these days (although The Astonishing is my least favorite individual album). There are still good moments in there of course, but man, the songs can get so damn cringy at points. Especially in the moments where the heaviness and wank overtake every other defining feature of their sound (looking at you, Train of Thought), or when the "spooky" sections get hammed up way too much (looking at you, Black Clouds)

Those are great Koris, agreed. And just give Portnoy time to settle in. I’m almost certain that it’s a matter of time before he tries controlling every breath the band takes. He’s still behaving and giving everyone a turn lol.

I really like Enemies part 1, Forsaken, Constant Motion, and Ministry on Systematic Chaos

I like every song, but there’s also parts on almost every song where I roll my eyes. In the Presence of Enemies Pts 1 and 2 and Constant Motion are probably my favorites. Listened to first two tracks of Black Clouds and I like them more than SC.

Thing is, despite my criticisms of that era, the highlights are still absolutely incredible. Count of Tuscany, Octavarium's t/t, In the Presence of Enemies, This Dying Soul... some of the band's best work imo

Sweet! I’ve seen a lot of hype for that song. I’m also looking forward to the bonus covers.
