You keep saying that but I just barely like Shelter, found it very meh.
Just relistened to the debut. Actually a bit boring and not quite as good as I remember. Voyages next.

Shelter is sooooooo damn good.

Like, same way that Opeth's Damnation is good? Cause that album bores me too lol.
Delivrance (off Shelter) is really good. I can just listen to that song by itself and have my fill of that sound.

I love Damnation too so idk lol. Atmosphere on Shelter is off the charts.

Jumelle is incredible, even better in context than as a single.
It's like the best parts of every 5-ish minute Alcest song meshed together.

just sounds like kodama and shelter squashed together at least to my ears, earlier alcest had a lot more minor intervals and melancholic vibes, idk, could just be my perception, doesnt sound like a rehash good or bad of everything they've done before

both shelter and damnation slap
last three alcest albums are non-mandatory listening

Flamme Jumelle is Alcest's prettiest ever song.

Voyages is actually a bit better than I remember, have to bump. Still a bit too overlong and slow-moving but really consistently solid.
Shelter's up next.

Damnation being a chore has a lot to do with dreich prog balladry and Shelter being (by Alcest's standards) excellent has a lot to do with leaning harder into expansive songwriting that cruises on atmosphere rather than riffs. Terrible comparison between two totally different records

I made that comparison because each of those albums was a pretty drastic change in overall sound and style for each respective band (Damnation probably moreso than Shelter). Both were "softer" versus everything that came before them, and I found both boring.

voyages has some good stuff but i think theres something with the sounds that kind of drains me, but nowhere near as bad as SI. the snare sounds like its underwater or somethin

Production on SI was definitely off. If it weren't for that and the closer having it's best part in the middle of the song instead of at the end, I would probably have 5'd it. Absolutely love the darker more aggressive tone on that one.
Almost as much as I love the warm and sunny feel of this one.

Production on SI was definitely off. yeah dude i couldn't listen to the record more than twice bc of how gross it sounded to me
anyway kodama > l'aurore >shelter > souvenirs > écailles > voyages > > > spiritual

Budgie, I love that you 5'd this but putting Ecailles that low is bananas.

Album Rating: 4.5
just frame it as putting shelter and souvenirs that high instead of écailles that low !!
|
| |
budgie ranking is not that far off tbh - this belongs in the bottom half rather than the top half, but can't rly drag it beyond that

"Budgie, I love that you 5'd this but putting Ecailles that low is bananas. "
i'd put ecailles even lower. it's their worst album.
