Spinning this for a second time, my opinion seems to be more tempered this time around.. it's a really good album, undoubtedly. But some songs seem to just capture an atmosphere and not do much with it, House of Self-Undoing would be an example of that. And in other cases it just leans a bit more on pop tropes than what I like, but that's just personal. I'm all about the darkest stuff in this, Tunnel Lights, Dusk, and Whispers..
This is winding up to be a 4.5

‘chelsea and cult of luna pls‘
This is such a bloody weird yearning for someone who hates Mariner. Eh, I mean Chelsea is different to Xmas, but I imagine you’d have pretty much all the same issues with that theoretical collab… unless it was Wolfe ‘occasional secondary vox’ but then what’s the point in that case?

After about 4-5 listens of this, it’s good. Better than Hiss Spun but not to the level of Abyss or PiB.
Songs like House of Self Undoing, Eyes Light Nightshade, and Everything Turns Blue make me feel indifferent. That said, Place in the Sun, the synth work in Unseen World, Dusk and Liminal Shade are quite great.

I was gonna explain why this was an emphatic self-own, but think I’ll let you work it out for yourself

agreed with johnny that Dusk might not be the closer for this one, but its a great song on its own
the drumbeat reminds me a lotttt of TV on the Radio's "Blind" and she mentioned she was inspired by another song on that EP (obvs same producer) but it makes me wonder....

I preferred when I didn't know Pika 's reasoning for hating on Mariner, now it really doesn't make sense lol
|
| |
99% chance Pika never even heard it all the way through.

Same issue with this album as the last few. Melodramatic electronic music just isn't for me. I prefer when she was doing dark folk kinda stuff

Well I’ll get melodramatic or whatever while we’re talking about it
Going from tracks like “They’ll Clap When You’re Gone” to “Place in the Sun” is so inspiring. It makes me so happy to see that she seems content.
I don’t really watch many interviews and obviously don’t know her personally. But knowing sobriety was a theme behind the record hits extra hard for me.
This record is beautiful and I can’t wait to see her live

Pain Is Beauty is one of my top 10 favorite albums. That is my favorite sound of hers bar none, and tbh i think this might be better

I don’t think I would go that far, but this is so damn good. It gets better every time I listen to it, and it feels so dense despite being one of her shorter records. I feel like I notice something new on every listen
