Agreed. If it’s serviceable or pretty good, I’m cool with it. It’s like dialogue in a movie. Like you said, as long is it “don’t make me cringe or feel embarrassed to be listening to it“

>For instance dance music in general like you could say pretty much anything on a loop as long as it enhances the vibez
im the spoonman talks to god transfusion penetration m/ m/ m/

“ just describe shit that is or happened or they want to be in the most basic or vague ways”
Trent reznor is the king of this. Post downward spiral his lyrics became so vague and ambiguous they simultaneously mean everything and nothing at all. Like anyone on the planet can relate to any given post ds NiN song not because they are so universal and human that they are that effective but because they are so absolutely fuckin trite that you can interpret them in a million marginally different ways so that they can be applied to any persons circumstances

Oooh, i feel the same way. His lyrics are my biggest barrier to his work. I tend to enjoy his instrumental pieces much more. If they’re okay, I’m cool, but they also have to too many times where it’s like “GOD IS DEAD”

^ Yeah, they're often way more effective. He has a weird tendency, even as a middle-aged gent, to write lyrics like a brooding 14 year-old (along with saying the word "decay" about a trillion times per record). He can get it together sometimes though... when he does, I think it's overall really great. But agree, his generally embarrassing lyrics are a major barrier to entry.

Really hope we don't have to wait 2 plus years for a full length.

is early nin the best music with the worst lyrics

not if Trent's cleans count as music

lololol to be fair his vocals could not be a better match for the lyrics

"is early nin the best music with the worst lyrics"
Probably.
Haven't really listened to anything in full beyond 'With Teeth' (exception being 'Bad Witch', which sounded pretty reinvigourated), but the former was almost going into self parody... "Only" being a prime example, on an album where even the music wasn't anything special.

I don’t have a problem with early nin lyrics, they are much better than post downward spiral in that they are at least more specific and also drug-addled and edgy.
I’ll take “I wanna fuck you like an animal” 1000x over
“You and me were in this together now and til the very end of plow we will make it through somehow cow mow tow “
|
| |
Also only slaps but the lyrics are a perfect example of saying so little that you are saying everything at once

^ It's a powerful tool when it works... it's part of the reason why the last 90 seconds of "The Perfect Drug" are so effective.

i like when the synths do the thing on that song
the chorus always pops into my mind when im pretending to read existential nihilism whilst wearing my pickle rick shirt

“most metal has stupid lyrics but "someone growling motherfucker" tends to be the province of mass appeal tuff guy slipknot and deathcore shit. or at least i never heard it in immolation, gorguts, ulcerate idk“
Yeah it’s the cornball tuff stuff that’s the most cringe for me generally too. Mid 2000s era was very rough for that stuff between all the big foil font band shirts that look like they could be found at Spencer’s that say stuff like “W H A T T H E F U C K” or even better, the edgelord slutshaming shirts lol

@isis that’s cuz back then they weren’t OVERLY vague. It was the right balance. After downward spiral it comes off more and more like he just doesn’t have anything to say

^ Yeah, not having much to say is kind of his latter-day problem. He doesn't draw from the widest lexicon and has generally backed himself into a corner of moany teenage angst whilst all the while being very rich and increasingly very old.
I hold him up as a prime example of this phenomenon.

yea at least mjk figured out how to transition from angry white boy vaguely but genuinely pissed at hypocrisy and religion to embracing hippie spirituality

^ Very true. He admits at least, that he's not young and broke and has adjusted accordingly. It'd be silly to pretend otherwise.
