"Always an ironic ‘pop’ product carried along by the song craft."
Yeah, I suppose. Their debut was fresh from the highly contrived label and boyband era... so they pushed that "fake" group thing to its natural endpoint. But with the visuals and the tunes, it definitely worked.

‘He wasn’t hearing dub and trip hop influences for the first time when he heard Gorillaz’
This is very true pots. Unfinished Sympathy absolutely knocked me for six when it came out.
A top 10 musical ‘moment’ without a shadow of doubt. Fucking staggering.

Definitely not solely carried by song craft, especially since they had so many terrible songs along the way. A product of elevated conceptualization and a willingness to experiment enough to both fail and succeed on a spectacular level.

I listened again and my prognosis is that this is too safe and samey, but almost every song is at least decent in its own right. As an album though it really needed to be more adventurous, especially with the rhythm section and drumming. All the bonus tracks are useless. I'd give it 3.2-3.3.

^123 this except switch every song being decent in its own right to being trash

unfortunately this is one of the Gorillaz albums where the best part is the features and the worst part is everything else

ok now, i went back and just listened to skinny ape again, on its own. and it's sad because the 1st couple of seconds sounds promising, like old Dubby gorillaz. But nah, that annoying bass and drums come in and it ruins the vibe the song seemed like it was going for. The production on this whole album is atrocious, it's so so sad.

like, fr. Just listen to the depth of bass and the quirky synths on White Flag. That's a deep cut from Plastic Beach and still leaves EVERYTHING on here like, 10 miles behind in production quality. Some shit just takes TIME to get ripe and juicy, man. on god.

mf went and got a lebanese orchestra to play for HALF a song, just to get the right vibes.
Compare that to now, where's the VISION?

I haven't kept up with the discourse for this, is the general consensus is its fine with some cool features but everything is just kinda underbaked and we have to poke around the casserole for morsels of nuggets but a lot of the pasta is still dry?
