I'm on like my fourth of fifth jam right now and its really starting to grow on me, city burials never really grew on me much, it just meandered somehow.

alright a couple things, first Brave Murder Day is not gothic metal at all, it's closer to doom death but it has strong elements of black metal (vocals are Mikael from Opeth so they're death growls tho), there's some moments of kind of post punky goth rock type stuff but that's more like interludes. if you've ever listened to Pale Folklore from Agalloch then you know what to expect there, they straight lifted that from BMD.

second, in no way shape or form did Rapture ever even come close to the majesty of BMD (or the companion EP Sounds of Decay), and I say that as someone that really liked Rapture.

"huge cringe comment, its fine to dislike something and voice your displeasure with it but don't talk about the artists who put the art you consume together like this, extremely disrespectful."

sorry man, these dudes are clearly on antidepressants which makes all their stuff from the last two decades just completely inert on the emotional front when compared to their earlier music. probably healthier for the artists but not for the art.

Doubling down I see lol. I just want the discourse about art be better in the places I am active in.

sorry but there's no way you can say that criticizing a band known for super emotional music to drop that emotional quality is poor discourse. that's just lunacy, my guy.

nah its lunacy to just flatly assume what is going on in an artists life based on your subjective take on their art and to accuse them of not putting any heart into what they do is pretty insulting. also further perpetuating the myth about artists having to be miserable to create worthwile art. you really bring out some of the classic tropes of internet discourse i despise.

I'm pretty sure Jonas is still miserable, it comes across pretty heavy in his emotional lyrics and vocals on newer Katatonia. Lots of assumptions going on here.

It's obvious from the lyrics how many mgs of antidepressants are involved here

this is just one so easy to imagine that away from being a baller cashmoney comment that tells you everything that really matters about this band. so close, but so so far

Singles are still my favourites after a few listens.

Quite weird but I like the catchy riffs and choruses from Katatonia more than their quiet, monotonous songs that meander along without highlights and sound the same on every album. Behind the Blood from the last album was therefore also my favourite.

'Author' is also great, nice vocals by Jonas on that song, rest of the non single songs is a tad better than the non singles on Burials, average should be higher than that album imo.

The huge sound alone makes this a 3.4+ at least.

Music sounds cool, but same-y at once.

Went on our honeymoon to Sweden, picked up the Melancholium box set from Sound Pollution in Stockholm, prized possession haha.

sure, i'm making some assumptions here, but the crux of the point is that the emotional core of their music is completely gone and has been for 20 years. their music now sounds completely and totally bereft of emotion and they replaced that with this prog-lite sound. that's a bummer to me. you're coming across kinda poorly here champ. tone it down some. take a step back, take a breather, think things through a bit more.

nope honestly you're the one coming across terribly here. just because you don't identify with the emotion that's being expressed doesn't mean emotion isn't there. it's frankly the biggest imaginable insult to accuse a musician of not putting their heart into it and the one who should 'tone it back' is probably you.
