VlacDrac: "@veldin The host is very cringy, but I enjoyed listening to Omar and Cedric's answers, they seemed very genuine."
I saw this too the other night... I haven't heard the album yet beyond the singles, but this was quite a remarkable interview putting it into context.
Zane Lowe--the host--I haven't listened to an interview of his in years, and it hit me again how painfully cringe they are, and how the runtime of any given parlez is at least 50% him talking, but I'd have to give him credit here in illiciting the most emotive and seemingly heartfelt responses I've ever seen from these guys.
It genuinely makes it feel like this album is exactly the one they needed to make... hence it being self-titled, even though, it's apparently the least "Mars Volta-y". Quite something.

@IsisScript80: Give the album a try, it seems it was very therapeutic, also, having watched that interview, one can confirm why does the album sound the way it sounds, almost amateur-like regarding the mixing and the quality of the recordings; it's quite messed up how Cedric and company were keeping this album a secret in order to prevent scientologist harassing them, just like that line from the interview along the lines of: "just became I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't after me".

‘Amp + Frances supremacy. none of the rest rly matter‘ (2)
Disappointing to be agreeing with Johnny but this is kind of my view now and my old self hates me for it

@VlacDrac: Yeah, I very much intend on giving this a spin soon. I've held off thus far, through not being really in the right mood for a former fave band make a predictably muted comeback, but I am glad I saw that interview first to give the first listen its true context (further to what iI was already aware of re. the fucked up shit with Cedric and the Scientologists).

Instruments sound buried in the mix, the most noticeable aspect of this album is Cedric's voice.

yeah unfortunately Cedric’s voice overwhelms everything else and is mostly completely unbearable
also I do like Deloused, I just hear a lack of cohesion at times and it can be very excessive. It was always part of the charm I guess, TMV’s modus operandi is (or was) excess but I feel it was harnessed in more consistently satisfying ways on Frances or Amp. Deloused is messier than it’s reputation, for me

Even if you hate the album, check out this recent interview with Cedric and Omar, it's fantastic and really gives some context to the album/how it happened, etc. Even if you don't like the album but are a fan of their previous stuff, there's some interesting personal stuff in there you may find interesting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy41vKDlAGA&t

I happened to have just watched that interview and that’s what drew me into checking this out and looking it up in Sputnik. Francis the Mute is in my top 5 all time so I’m a big fan but I mostly live under a rock and don’t find out about new releases until something like that interview on YouTube crosses my path.

well these guys finally decided to make songs and not just a jumble of a million ideas squeezed into 5 or 7 minute tracks (i do like de-loused and francis but they're hard records to return to after 8 or 10 years). Palm Full of Crux is beautiful

I was not a fan. I always give albums three listens out of rule and my first listen I could not fathom why they made this album. I softened up on my next couple listens and almost rated this a three but based off my initial reaction this album only got three spins and a 2.5 from me. Not saying I’ve lost any faith in the mars volta at all but this album wasn’t it. This was like Max Bemis trying to do say anything by himself. Just like a sad recollection of what used to be. Just my opinion. 😁
