His voice changed a lot throughout the years

Agreed Mess was never better than on Secret Band LP2. He is great here though.

To be fair Mess's vocals aren't terrible, they're just annoying. But I'm yet to listen to any DGD outside this album. Are they always this annoying and un-funny?
EDIT - His vocals somehow sounds less annoying in Afterburner, in fact I'm digging the more stripped back sound of the opening track on that. It's not actually that bad!
EDIT EDIT - Just got to track 2, OK major drop in quality from the opener.

Just gave Afterburner a listen, and I think it's better than this. Honestly reckon I'd enjoy these a lot more if they stopped being a joke band and wrote something a bit more serious. Just feels like they have little to no substance, and when they do try to be funny it just ends up sounding dumb and cringey. But yeah, Prisoner is a great song!

Idk, I didn't listen to DBMII immediately before this so my bad if the vocals aren't identical. I still think he sounds good. My favorite Mess is on the self-titled, DBMII, and Secret Band.
@MyMentality, Afterburner is meh but the whole Tilian era is pretty hit or miss. I think you'd like Acceptance Speech 2.0 and Mothership though - both are generally great. Best era of the band is pre-Tilian though. There was silliness but the songs still felt like there was emotion behind them, especially in tracks like Lemon Meringue Tie, The Backwards Pumpkin Song, Hot Water on Wool, and Caviar.

I want to give their entire discography a listen because I'm sure there's something I'll enjoy. Afterburner is a lot more tolerable for me, sure there's some stinkers (Three Wishes and Parallel's are awful) but Prisoner, One in a Million and Nothing Shameful are pretty good! Will check those tracks out too!

I definitely think Afterburner is better than this

I think Prisoner would be one of their best songs if not for the chorus. I just can't get down with it. Afterburner does have a few great songs - all of their albums have at least a few redeeming tracks so you're bound to find stuff to put in a playlist.

I can't get *that* into DBMII. Spooks and Heat Seeking Ghost of Sex are 10/10 but the rest has never resonated that heavily with me.

I should listen to it more. Pretty much every DGD album has had to grow on me.

The last 3 tracks of DBM2 are stellar. Swan Soup is my fav Jonny track
Prisoner is terrible, the noodly guitars just sounds like wet farts
