Yeah Irreversible is a great movie and it's very dark, but I wouldn't draw that comparison. Irreversible still has all the elements that make a great movie, like top-notch acting, cinematography, directing, editing, etc.. To me, this album is the musical equivalent of taking Irreversible's script and appointing the production team of The Room. All the potential this band has, namely the talent of the players, is squandered by their execution. It throws all the favorable qualities of metal music out the window, such as melody, structure, catchy riffs, crushing brutality, etc. and replaces it with... whatever the hell this is supposed to be.

This isn't about squalor though, if anything it's about hyper-decadence/opulence/excess which is the only thing that keeps me wondering if it has artistic merit

Based on the homogeneous brand of metal that gets repped on here all the time I don't really understand when albums that sound unique and creative get shit on, but I could see someone just not liking the genre at all

This sounds like a mixture of deathspell omega and atheist to me

‘You don't have to pretend you're enjoying something to maintain a façade of heightened understanding.’
You seem to be misunderstanding an important fact here, people ARE enjoying listening to this, no-one’s pretending, lol

I don’t hear Atheist, yeah there are the obvious jazz leanings, but the two bands use those elements in such distinctly different ways. I’m not sure the comparison is particularly apt.

Pyrrhon seems closer, so I should re-check that band as I didn’t really enjoy them the first time around… although there is overlap it’s surprising how many people like one and not the other (like me).

I was hooked within seconds, honestly. Haven't paid much attention until now, seems like I've been missing out, and then some. Seriously disturbing shit, God I love it!

Phyrrron definitely has highlights but it always feels like a mess at the end to me. This may be repulsive, but damn if it isn't cohesive.
