Definitely also agree on their live performance - they're great, but I'm holding off on seeing them until I see another Neverender Tour. I just don't have any interest in seeing stuff like "Blood" or "A Disappearing Act" live

I fucking love IKS. It absolutely rules live but it loses some of its luster when you hear it every time you see the band.

Seconding A Disappearing Act being a great live song.

I think the main issue is that a lot of their songs haven't been given the opportunity to become live staples since they've more or less been operating under the same setlist paradigm since I first saw them in 2010. Most of the songs that they get added are usually the singles. As for their releases not being "loved", I would whole-heartedly disagree. You can chalk Color Before the Sun as being a miss, and maybe argue (incorrectly, in my opinion) about Year of the Black Rainbow and this being a miss, but their albums still sell and get reviewed about as well as a band in their scene and sound.

To me, a legacy act is a band clearly running on fumes creatively but still like to make a living from playing out on the road and I don't think these guys are anywhere close to that. It's just their longstanding insistence on giving priority to the original four records in the live space that messes with this perception, imo

Idk, on their color before the sun tour almost half their set (7 songs) were off that album and the rest were a decent mix across everything prior. I feel like they promote their new stuff in their live acts plenty while still playing the old classics

I like that of any Coheed lyric “Game Over; Love Murder One” is a horribly confusing one for you.

This review is trying way too hard lmao.

The 2 I absolutely want to see live the most. A disappearing act would be a lot of fun live

Finally got around to reading this review and it (1) was very well-written as usual, (2) made me laugh a few times, and (3) was somehow very sharp and focused as an argument/critique despite its generally flippant/sassy tone. Props for a job well-done. That said, I really disagree with one section here: "Claudio Sanchez, typically the master of memorably oblique lyrics and delightfully contorted vocal hooks, is here reduced to singing however many variations of exactly the same vocal melody through the back of his nose and occasionally acquitting otherwise hookless songs with such apropos-nothing cornerstones as GAME OVER LOVE MURDER ONE." I think the melodies here are distinct enough, and his vocals are pretty much the same as always (?) unless my 30-something ears are starting to lose their edge, and all of these songs have huge hooks IMO. Agreed the lyrics are bad/silly, but they've always been for the most part. I think the main argument here about this being a distilled/sterilized "Coheed mass-packaged for stadium plebs" is your most effective axe to grind, but anyway I digress -- I clicked on the review in battle mode ready to start a fight, but you effectively charmed and disarmed me into a meek admission of "different strokes, lol", so nicely done.

i will bestow a lifetime of karma upon anyone who can break down LOVE MURDER ONE into an intelligible english sentence. coheed's cryptic/oblique/referential lyrics are fab and part of the band's charm; that one is just a stupid tagline
and cheers sow but yeah, the only source i have for hooks/catchiness is how firmly they've stuck with me (not at all), but i am glad that y'all are latching onto them - tbqh of all the albums from the last few yrs that i'd consider flat-out terrible, this is probably the one i've been happiest to see succeed regardless. definitely did feel like claudio's inflection game was weaker than usual on this, but you could probably level that argument at any of the last [x] coheed albums just as pertinently

At first I thought it was going to be like keeping score in a match: "love zero, murder one" which still would have been a bad lyric but at least it would have been understandable. I visited Genius Lyrics in hope of a pedestrian interpretation but alas even they're out of ideas on that one.

"LOVE MURDER ONE" is a reference to hockey. Coheed and Cambria being from New York and therefore Rangers fans, they wanted to symbolize how they felt watching their team continuously raise hopes only to murder them. It's all in the subtext Johnny ffs

Also, the past few times I listened to Cruel Summer my mind went to your review summary instead of the actual lyrics, so thanks for ruining the best part of that song for me Johnny.

I have just been assuming it’s:

Game’s over love (referring to a person), murder won (explaining why the games over).

Unfortunately, upon typing that out I’m seeing that I’m likely wrong considering that’s the wrong spelling of one lmao
