To listen to this record, I switched to a brighter sounding iPod and bought a pair of earphones with balanced armature drivers. Finally, it became a little more clear and acceptable.
Because it's PUP, I'm willing to do that.

Was expecting this to be more interesting based off the first song released.

Pup was by far the best act I saw at coachella, the gf stage dove which was quite a sight to behold

I agree with that sentiment, except honestly the songwriting slightly meh and drops off a tiny bit with each album. Most of these songs are decent but not all that interesting. I' still maintain that their debut was the best thing they ever made

agreed butt, but tbh morbid stuff wasnt really that different songwriting wise. this one is. feels like they dumbed down their formula a lot

on first listen this is pretty easily their worst album
i'd prob rank them debut > morbid > dream >>> this

I need to re-listen to their debut because I have always only 'liked' it while I love morbid and dream. I think this is just a minor step down from those 2 tho

Album Rating: 3.5 | Sound Off
The biggest problem with the production is the drums. They sound like crap. Weak guitar and vocal mix's can still sound decent with some impactful drums. But here, they have no impact. Nothing feels dynamic and feels like he's smacking a wad of styrofoam.
On top of all that, everything is so damn muddy. Nothing sit's right in the mix. The lows are weak, and the mids and highs are all jumbled together. No clarity, just a wall of noise.
I get going for the lo-fi sound, but I feel like bands can be so focused on not being "fake" or "overprocessed" that they forget that it still needs to sound good to the ears.
It's a shame too, because there are some really cool songs here, but it all just feels lackluster. You try to enjoy the songs, but "this doesn't sound very good" is always sitting in the back of your head.
