yeah I’m with the nerdy tech black metal bit. This is still solid it’s just not at all what I want from the band.

@Aluktodolo Well name me one black metal artist who claims to be a nihilist and isn't at least a bit edgy...

Aside from that, I believe that even with their superficial interest in philosophy as you've said, they are the still the deepest thing this scene has to offer. Ohh and mgla. I'll have to revisit the bardo interview though, to see if it's as pretentious as you claim. On the other hand I would sincerely appreciate if you could recommend me something less pretentious that combines at least decent composition skills with "ideology" in BM.

I think the idea of “depth” is sort of misapplied here, the deepest bands are arguably those that channel nature and heritage, not satanism or nihilism. Nihilism is a pretty straightforward upshot of atheism (but nihilism doesn’t need to be edgy). And Satanism is kind of silly, because Satan just isn’t real 😂 In terms of occult/orthodox ideology in bm though, highly recommend VI - De Praestigiis Angelorum. Also Absu’s occult stuff is pretty interesting and not too pretentious, and the music is great. Akhlys also have an occult vibe which they pull off super well. Funeral Mist Has a lot of ideology but the music varies in how interesting it is.

@heppasodge Well Nihilism when it comes to philosophy is far more dimensional than simply perceiving it as atheism. It has to do with a lot of stuff depending on the perspective and one of them is ofc atheism. Anyway, Absu are cool I have to check the other stuff though. I must admit that I didn't know of the ideological aspects of Funeral Mist. I'll have to check them out more thoroughly.

My point is that some form of nihilism at the cosmic level is endorsed by pretty much all atheists, and its a pretty widely-endorsed life philosophy in the west, which is why nihilist themes promoted by bands like mgla and DsO are arguably less 'deep' than explorations of heritage and nature imo. it's also why explorations of nihilism in bm can come across as edgy (there is nothing particularly extreme or dark or subversive about nihilism, because it is a view that is already so widely endorsed in the developed west). to be sure: mgla and DsO do have more sophisticated explorations of nihilism than a lot of other bands. the ideology is also woven into the music compellingly

“That being said, apart from a few passages they do not "cut and paste" at all.”

@Frost: I remember someone doing a massive breakdown of their lyrics and ‘ideology’ on music forum I forget the name of now, though it was circulated as a link pretty widely at the time. It was pretty shocking how much of their lyrical content was straight up lifted from elsewhere. Not even paraphrased, just whole segments copied and pasted. Their most ‘original’ lyrics in terms of being their own is most likely The Furnaces and that’s some garbage aggro centrist nonsense about the ‘dangers of authoritarianism’, delivered by a fascist. I thought those lyrics were dreadful, because they hedged their bets by playing ‘both sides’ whereby fascists can claim it’s about (((western degeneracy))) and ‘liberals’ can claim it’s about right wing overreach. It was about as dangerous and lyrically illuminating as a modern Muse album. The black metal equivalent of NWO. Utter crap. Their Bardo interview just confirmed to me that they’re pseudo intellectual frauds, who think they can weasel out of collaborating with neo nazis by claiming it was ‘for the art’, as if anyone with a functioning brain cell buys that for a second.

@Aluktodolo. Guess I'm an "aggro centrist" and openly embrace many "conspiracies", NWO among them so I guess we are doomed to disagree. For me they are far from pseudo intellectualists but we won't reach any consensus so...

donald trump tanked the DOW Jones by shitposting about china when he was cranky one time and people actually think a shadow government runs this shit instead of the far scarier reality that they actually don't.

Most of you Americans think you are the center of the earth or something. Donald Trump is a fucking puppet like every politician on earth currently. All social problems are created or inflamed to keep you "entertained", killing each other horizontally and while that happens more cameras everywhere, worse food, worse health, worse working conditions, more pills to depend on... Just follow the money and you will reach the ones who truly control everything. Who rescued Donald Trump after his repeated bankruptcies? Who do the Clintons work for? It's all a fucking circus to create the illusion that you choose something when in reality you don't choose shit. Hell, the people running the show are coming out nowadays more than ever but talking about it is dangerous. People have died or "vanished" for exposing certain things or talking about certain groups. And I'm not talking about no Alex Jones nor any other shill. The people who tell the truth in this world are barely known. Actually talking about what happens is a transgressive act but don't listen to me, everybody here knows better and I'm a crazy wacko who happens to like music too much. It's a drug for me. Some people smoke pot, others do crack, others get drunk, I use music to cope in this asylum...

Yes their lyrics come from other sources. I think the majority of FAS came from Georges Bataille's Inner Experience?
