MJ probably in the same boat, but I never bothered with his early stuff
ditto Faye Wong
and Underworld
and Neurosis
and Pantera
and the Beach Boys
and maybe the Gathering (though I have heard theirs and it mostly doesn't suck)
Radiohead a very obvious example

I like stevie wonder as an answer cuz it wasnt just one or two albums. someone who started making shit really young (so MJ too) definitely checks out. with radiohead im less inclined just cuz it's the one (1) album people agree was a slow start

beach boys makes sense for sure too, tho "surfer girl" is fire

Prince and the National feel parallel: an album barely anyone listens to, an album some people like, and then the classic run

Neurosis makes sense even if I dig their early stuff

Pantera you’d be better off not starting at all

The Bends would make a lot of all-time lists if OKC didnt exist, and does anyways. I kinda like it too personally is maybe the bigger issue

I used to think there was less "distance" (?) between it and PH than was supposed by most fans tho, so I get the take

Maybe Merzbow? People tend to ignore most of the 80s material, although it's not necessarily a quality issue...

MJ and Stevie are similar cases I guess: the donning of artistic autonomy was much more literal than usual just cuz they were tiny babys at first

I still gotta hear if anything off that 1977 bjork album is better than anything off that 1973 foster sylvers album. battle of the 11 year olds ("misdemeanor" is one of my fav songs)

potential quick hitters off the top of me noggin’ for ‘not recommended’- Trophy Scars, Fen, Falls of Rauros, Anna Von Hausswolff, ISIS, Melt-Banana, John Coltrane, Converge, Every Time I Die, Rolo Tomassi (I did this in real time, still not recommended!)
