My last comment was a tired attempt to take the bait, but now that I'm actually thinking about it, I'm troubled by Johnny's apparent definition of "bland." Your comparison to comfort shit like Pixar movies suggests that, like, derivativeness/packaging factor necessarily into whether or not something is bland, but idk these seem exterior to the flavor, or at least they're independent enough not to tank a thing's overall quality. Your major issue with the Avalanches is probably aesthetic. And that's fine. Sure, I'm a cereal-minded weak-hearted and vanilla American shrimp. You can remind me of that all day. But don't call my sweet new favorite album ever bland ;)

the comparison to pixar is apt: pixar is high quality 90% of the time and so is this.

This is very nice, better than the overrated one, not quite as fresh as the underrated one.

Which one is the most overrated?

I’ve always found it a pastiche of everything that had come previously in the 90s and offered nothing new whatsoever. Stale.
Frontier Psychiatrist is a belter though.

hmm interesting
I suppose it is the most blatantly Pastichey of em all
it's one of my fav albums ever tho, was my solid "favorite ever" ages 12-18 or so so can't follow you there
weirdly enough "frontier psychiatrist" is my least favorite other than maybe a couple of the shorter tracks: sort of feels like the sample-based "concept" of the song swallows up the whole thing, so that it's sort of more campy/conceptual/odd than the Pure Beauty of other stuff on the alb
appreciate yr perspec as always tho hahaha

Ah so that's the overrated one! Which 90's recordings did it imitate?

Loads of ‘mix DJ’ types. Coldcut and what have you.
