I think you're conflating "cool" with "popular." Think Breakfast Club: Molly was popular but Judd Nelson was cool. Molly was almost certainly a Madonna girl while Judd was into Husker Du.

I think they're meant to be somewhat synonymous, in a lot of contexts anyway. If I asked my sister "what's cool among 13 year olds nowadays?" I would expect her to tell me what's popular.
