I think their compositions on Aquarius - The Mountain played to Ross' strenghts as a singer, and after that they kinda went the more rhythmic route which hasn't done him much service. He's a good singer, just maybe a bit more limited compared to what we maybe expect from prog singers. When they build the songs around him, he's great

That's a good point.
I can't think of many head voice moments on Visions

@Mythodea:
I listened carefully to that part in Carousel now. I never disliked that part, but I see what you mean. Ross' tone in that register of his voice somehow lacks depth. It's becomes much lighter in tone and doesn't fit with the heavier music. The band really isn't playing to his strengths here.
But I still think Prosthetic's chorus is my least favorite vocal moment here, it just sounds really generic.
Invasion might be the best song here imo.
Messiah Complex is a suite, not one big song. Chopping it into individual tracks makes sense imo, since a suite is choppy in its nature

that might explain some of the more awkward transitions such as the one between part 3 and 4, if they were going for a "prog suite" rather than a long-playing epic

No offence but Ross doesnt have that great voice for prog since he's not flexible enough. I think Aquarius might have been the best album for him (you can hear that after remastering). Right now the guy is really struggling. If they managed to get someone who also has original tone but is more flexible than Ross and has better range they might actually become really fucking solid in my eyes

I don't want to bash Ross, I actually like his singing and never had any problems with him. It's just that part that aaaaargggg, I can't get why they rolled with it

I think Ross would be fine as a singer if he wasn't in the forefront that much, it's the same problem that BtBaM has. Both vocalists are good for sure, but they should not be the forefront of the music. And yes, they should build their music more around Ross, because he can sound very nice, but it's quite obvious his vocals do not really like the awkward high parts (although there are parts on Vector where it sounds really good when he sings high).

Genuinely curious who you think is a great prog vocalist if you find Ross not so great. All ears.

Add Spencer to that list (he got really great recently), Dan Tompkins, Casey Crescenzo and Loic from The Ocean and the list is complete. Actually, maybe Andrew from Arcane Roots too but tbh he had a great timbre which did a lot of work

Oh fuck me forgot about Tommy Karevik and Russell Allen

I thought about adding Sponce. Really liked his performance on Hail Stan. Not so big on Tompkins recently tbh. Casey is really great, but I don't consider TDH to be prog tbh

Although I've grown away from Periphery a bit, I still do enjoy Spence's vocals. They can come across as grating, though, if I'm not really in the mood for their music.

Depends on the album and songs for me tbh.

Actually a pretty nice list. Forgot Maynard James Keenan though.

Dan actually kinda reminds me of Jim but with screams, he's relly solid. He's streaming on twitch a lot and there's actually a recording on YouTube of him doing all of Sonder live. Don't agree on TDH with you bro, while their latest album wasn't really prog, rest is a perfect example of progrock mixed with indie and a little poppiness

I've always thought Maynard was good, although nothing particularly special

Nice additions! We should not forget about Ian Kenny as well

Kenny rules, especially on Sound Awake. Jørn Lande of Ark and John Carbone of Moon Tooth are both pretty awesome too

I'm not into Tool at all so cannot say a lot in here
Jørn Lande is great too, hell yeah! Not my type of music but loved his appearence on Ayreon
