I used to feel the same way about it but surprisingly it has been growing on me a lot lately. And I was very dismissive of it since the release. A lot of tunes here are just solid af imo.

Fantano will occasionally give a "safe" album a good score but in general he does definitely prefer "boundary pushing" and uniqueness.

Well, he did think Billy eilish was boundary pushing in her own genre and believed she was unique in her genre so a higher score.

this is better than i expected personally but not as good as i would have thought given all the praise that legit journos were giving it. i think it at least shows the strokes still have a pulse!

Album Rating: 2.5 | Sound Off
The Strokes have been looking to re-invent themselves over the last couple of albums, which has resulted in somewhat of an identity-crisis: What has made The Strokes so successful in the past is their sloppy garage kind of "nihilist indie rock" sound, but this is not a sole ingredient for long-term, decades covering success, as their breakthrough sound has been emulated by many bands in retrospect.
This album has more interesting synth-patterns and guitar work than what they've done in the past, and in general has a pretty cool mesh of low-fi synth-pop and avant garde-rock, something that their previous 2 albums failed quite miserably at: The Comedown Machine and Angles were indeed very bland records. In general the song-writing is surprisingly dynamic, sometimes unpredictable and something that demands your focus; yet this goal sometimes misses the mark, resulting in overly simplistic jam-sessions with not much reward at the end.
The Voidz may still be a more interesting project, but I'm glad to see The Strokes regain some sense of soul and life again.

"The Adults Are Talking" and "At the Door" are my takeaways from this, the rest I'll probably never return to
