i have a question

how come amongst the legions of artists on sput that continually stir up controversy for murder, domestic abuse, sexual assault, pedophilia, nazism etc etc, gg allin never gets dragged?

even outside of sput. i've straight up met 'feminists' who stan gg allin like wtf is that

i’ll be honest when i say that lots of times i’m somewhat of an uninformed listener so my curiosity is about responsibility as a music fan regarding the “extracurriculars” of such artists

maybe people just think gg allin is such low-hanging fruit that what's the point of even bringing him up in that kind of conversation

that and I swear no one seems to know anything about the dude, especially on sput i wouldn't have thought he was that big

often i am too and i'll admit that im a tOtAl FeNcEsItTeR when it comes to that particular conversation because i think it's really easy to dismiss artists whose music you don't like as monsters when their extracurriculars have involved distasteful practice, but it's another thing entirely when you've genuinely connected with their music for years before you find out about something gross, or when super influential artists die etc...

like i'm not going to bitch at people who still like MJ and Bowie for instance. and, say tomorrow we find out Thom Yorke slapped a news reporters titties, i'd be disappointed but I wouldn't go burn my original pressings of Amnesiac and Kid A.

if an artist was introduced to me with the awful piece of shit story on the other hand, I'd be vastly less inclined to check it out. like i've never heard a single gg allin song as far as i know and i don't ever plan on it.

that’s maybe the only fair way to go about it seeing as knowledge of various egregious behaviors would certainly have more of an impactful effect on people before or when initially becoming familiar with the music itself

its certainly a tad more disconcerting if you're like "here this dude is straight up a pedophile" *hands r kelly cd to stranger* and they are like "oh fuck yeah bud lemme bump that shit"

At least with GG Allin he was more just crazy stage antics so people knew what they were getting into and you could make the point that he had a message of unrestrained freedom even if his methods and levels of extremity are questionable at the least. On top of that much of the shit GG talked about in interviews was him making up shit to provoke the media

I feel that the context between GG and Varg is at least a bit different.

actually strangely enough regarding the whole chris brown/rihanna situation way back when he ended up gaining about as many fans inevitably as he lost & lots of women fans you couldn’t convince them of any wrongdoing on his part of your life depended on it

as someone who was a huge fan of him growing up i can’t say my opinion of his music changed but i did notice myself carrying an unfavorable opinion of his material following that whole drama but even then it may just be that his musical direction shifted in response to it

Context between varg and gg allin is very different without a doubt

But even with people knowing what they were getting into, and ignoring all the assault and property damage, cutting yourself and getting your blood on people and flinging your shit into a crowd is an insanely negligent act that could wind up getting you charged with anything up to attempted murder or manslaughter these days with criminal transmission laws. Not to mention all the alleged sexual assault.

I dont know much at all about any of the sexual assault allegations. But honestly shit flinging and self-harm on stage isnt something I care too much about especially in comparison to someone who murdered someone and believes white people are being replaced.

Theres no doubt that GG Allin is a fucked up egotistic dude but I wouldnt put him on the same level as nazis and abusers. Though hearing about allegations does make me a little more iffy on him now.
