I am positively surprised by this one and how rich it sounds, still don't know where I rank it in my mind.

Glad people are enjoying this. I agree about how rich and full of ideas it is.
My review score for Sorceress is higher than this, but after the release hype died down I realized how subbar a lot of it was. My rating for it these days is like 6-6.5 out of 10.
Same thing happened with PC, tho it’s better than Sorceress. Heritage was the opposite, where it grew on me massively since it was released.
With this, I listened to it many times and really gave an honest score that I can imagine would still reflect how I feel years from now. I’d love to give this album a 4 or even higher, but honestly some of the things that bother me means it’s slightly lower. Opeths music is very special and opinions can change over time, I think that’s a fair statement that probably applies to most of their fans feelings especially about this new phase.
I’ve felt for a while now that Heritage is easily their best and most creative album of this decade, with this in second place.

I didn’t like heritage at all but it was better than PC and sorceress. It felt like they got all their interesting prog ideas and influences out with that one and then were stuck with subpar dad rock

It’s idiosyncratic and pretty wonky though, with some of their best songs like Haxprocess, I Feel the Dark, Folklore, and Marrow of the Earth. It’s worth hearing just for the amazing rhythm section alone.

@itwasthatwas: Pretty much yeah, hoping this bucks the trend - the signs are inconclusive insofar concerning the quality, but at least it's certainly more interesting than the last 2.

heritage was pretty cool and all but PC is such a comfy listen that its easily my favorite of the decade so far. this could change that tho.

I still can't make up my mind how this fits within Opeth's discography, gonna need some dozen listenings. Similar to Fear Inoculum. The only stinker Opeth has is Sorceress.

In Opeth's case the rating system works like the logarithmic Richter scale.
