I think I was like 7 when Aenima came out, so missed the buzz. Lateralus was the huge album for my age group, but Aenima is easily better. A top 5 all time album for me easily

That was fine. 3/5, maybe a 3.2

Tool wore off a bit on me over the years, until I saw them live a few months ago. Its hard to describe how fucking monstrous that drum/bass sound is in person.

Great album, might bump to 4.5 eventually. Takes a few spins but the musicianship and ambition here is staggeringly good.

^ Aenima came out when radio was still at its peak. Stinkfist, H, 46 & 2, Aenima, and even Eulogy were played constantly on the local rock radio station near where I grew up. Eveyrone I knew had the CD, it was almost a badge of honor due to the artwork on the disc cover lol

Tool on the radio must be an USA thing haha
The only people over here who know about Tool are either metalheads or people who read the self-professed "music connoisseur" magazines

I’m both happy and unhappy about the death of radio and major labels. A lot of great artists were robbed of creative freedom and exposure in that era, but on the other hand no young band is ever going to be able to afford to make a really huge rock album again, and no rock band is ever going to be able to capture that kind of collective mindshare that you’re talking about

It's tedious and cringe.

Who knew that Tool still had their best song left in them after all this time? (7emptest)

I mean 7emptest is the best song on this album but I can think of several songs on Lateralus and Aenima that surpass it ahah

This is a pretty impressive accomplishment after 13 years. Say what you will about his age or his vocal approach these days, Maynard is the clear weakness on this thing though. There are so many moments that would be elevated with more energy and less subdued vocals. Descending has one of the best builds of any song on the album and then Maynard just disappears. Culling Voices is another example where the payoff feels underwhelming.

I mean I think he intentionally took a back seat to add a different vibe to the album. I actually like it, it makes this album more distinguished.

The weird thing about this album vs 10K Days is that this has no standout tracks whereas that had about 4. Yet this is a much better, more mature, more consistent album, at least on first impression.
