I gave this a shot without any preconceived idea of how I was going to like it. I'm not a Taylor Swift fan, but I do enjoy some radio selections from 1989. I felt that I could at least find that I liked more of her work based on singles from that album.
Ultimately, I found that this album was a slog. Eighteen tracks of pop music that really never grabbed me. There's not a "Shake it Off" or an "Out of the Woods", with infectiously catchy hooks that drag you back. In fact I found the opening track to be obnoxious in the worst way.
As an aside:
I think ironic thing about the song "The Man" was that if Taylor Swift was a man, she would not be famous-- dead stop. I look at talented women in pop like Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, and Adele and feel like Taylor Swift just cannot sing. She doesn't hold a candle to her peers and it's truly evident on this record. I am not at any point awed by her range or her pipes. This is a person that skated into Nashville on dad's money and good looks. I hate when extremely rich people think they don't have enough.

it's true that she doesn't have a voice like beyonce or lady gaga, but she can definitely sing

Feels good to bump this back to a 4.5. This will probably end up being my pop album of the year.

"I Forgot that You Existed" has some strong Regina Spektor notes for me.
Gotta love those deadpan verse endings, though. Classic Taylor.
