Wish he'd dial down on the choir and production. Great record, though.

For some reason I’ve never gotten around to listening to a Devin Townsend album, listened to this for the first time and honestly I have no idea how I feel about it. Some parts made me laugh out loud (in a good way) and I was never bored, but sections of the album I didn’t like just sounded like a mishmash of whatever the hell he felt like. It’s like it teeters on the edge of good and poor songwriting for me.

"Getting real tired of this epic / feel good obsession of his."
tbh i think this is way better than the stuff that came before it. as in those kinda blew, i dont mind this tho
@dannooo
dont recommend starting with his new stuff tbh other than maybe casualties of cool if u want something that isnt metal

I don't think I enjoyed anything Devy released last decade apart from Ghost and Casualties of Cool.
This is probably somewhere at the bottom for me too along with Z2 and Sky Blue

thats fair
def much prefer this to the other opera fart metal bs tho

It’s definitely a lot to take in for sure, but its silliness has grown on me, definitely going to check out his earlier work during this quarantine. Finally have some time to listen to more new music

@dannooo28: Ocean Machine, Terria, Ghost and Casualties of Cool are his best if you ask me. Start with Ocean Machine, one of the best records of all time. If you want a little more of this modern sound but a little more focused go for Addicted!, if you want more sillyness and metal go for Deconstructed.

Whilst I will always maintain how meh this album is in the context of Dev's discography, Singularity is a pretty amazing song. As a single, it would make a great mini-album on its own

Empath is the same as Eberron, but with a Sorn, a Champion of Gondolin and an Erinyes. Okay, they're still without great elementals, but they've still got an overwhelming number of great elemental spirits. (True Story: I had 5 elemental spirits in my Eberron campaign, and I was forced to be an evil archmage. I got an Evil Land Wurm whose very own Gnomish store would carry a full set of pillows and sleeping bags and such, and when I started offering it up to patrons, I was laughed out of town.

If Devin’s going to insist on this sort of massive bombast, Dude needs to start smoking again.
That or stick to the stripped down stuff
