“"Try jamming this with a girl in the car and tell me she doesnt cringe violently"
Ha! That’s a ridiculous argument.
I violently cringe every time my girlfriend watches Rupal’s Drag race and Riverdale. Doesn’t mean it’s not insanely popular entertainment that thousands of people enjoy every day.

"So like, can we talk about the actual album here? All I’m seeing is “hey guys this is a masterpiece!” Or “nah you’re wrong this is the worst album I’ve ever heard!”
Anybody got a favourite track?"
The division is because this album is so over the top it's meant to be divisive. My favourite track is "Why?" with probably "Hear Me" second.

Going from Sprite to Hear Me is such a gap in quality. That track is one of the best he has done in years.

Why? Is my favorite as well. I also absolutely love the first and last parts of singularity, both are fantastic, shame that the middle is a little uneven.

I feel like this album is the equivalent of Neon Genesis Evangelion: It fucks with your expectations, and after the mind trippy ending you either love it o hate it and who hated it it's usually because he identified himself way too much into it or completely missed the point.
Anyway the production alone of this is incredible. "Why?" is easily my favourite track, but I think that this record is done in such a way that even the stand alone tracks are not as good if taken out of it's context, "Spirits Will Collide" and "Sprite" are the perfect examples: take them out of the record and they are almost worthless, but in the record... they make sense. A lot. If I had to show this album to a friend I would just suggest him to listen to the whole thing on hi's own and come up with his conclusion, as I feel no single track can represent the whole experience.
This saved me from a long streak where I could not get into anything. The music industry is saturated with bullshit, it's just so difficult to find something someone can honestly relate and find interesting. At least that's what is it for me.
Good review but I do feel it's a bit biased even if I agree with pretty much everything (because I am also as biased). I wait for a "toned down" staff review that I am sure not going to agree with.

Not only have you compared two completely forms of art with zero relation to each other, you have subverting expectations equivalent to throwing tons of styles in a blender and topped it off with the good ol' "If you don't like this you don't get it" blanket statement.
The most shoehorned comparison I have ever read

"try jamming ANY music by devin townsend with a girl and tell me she doesnt cringe violently tbh"
Unless it's Ghost, Ki or Casualties of Cool...or, if the girl is Eastern European, Addicted.

I actually jammed this with my gf in the car. She's more of the Epicloud/Addicted and Ghost/Casualties Devin, but she enjoyed this. Not as much as I did though tbf.

@CalculatingInfinity
Something tells me you don't like Eva.
It is fine to don't like the record, it is not everyone's cup of tea and it has to be that way, because if it would be appealing to everyone then it would mean than there is something wrong. But by reading most of the comments, I feel like most people don't like it for the wrong reasons. It is a concept album. It is like reading The Dark Knight Returns and saying you hate it because you don't like the drawings.

It's not like the concept on this is like the wall or operation mindcrime where every track is connected and tells a weaving story. And in what way can you say that calculating doesn't like Eva because he doesn't like the 100th overblown progy devy record that we all just don't get.
|
| |
@OrdinaryVision: I loved Eva and I've liked multiple songs I've heard from this...so ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I'm on neither pure hate of this or massive love since I'd need to sit down with it from beginning to end to make a judgement, it's just that comment/comparison was so off-base it's baffling.

This albums kind of exhausting, I haven't been able to listen to it all the way through.

The end is definitely better than the beginning - the CoC-like section in Borderlands and the last part of Singularity are great
