This is still a masterpiece compared to 90% of rap unfortunately. The main reason I’m not a fan is expected more out of earl. Some good vibes here and there, it’s just nothing feels satisfying.

i feel mostly the same way... this feels way too disjointed. Can't bring myself to hate it, tho. there's definitely some good in it. Some cool beats, some interesting moments. It just needed like, a ton of effort that just doesn't feel like it's there, really.

"This is still a masterpiece compared to 90% of rap unfortunately." That makes you sound EXACTLY like someone who doesn't listen to enough rap tbh.

Mostly what I’m getting at is every song sounds freestyled

idk it seems to me his focus was on each song's overall feel and not necessarily its lyrical content. he has plenty of other tracks where the focus was on lyrics and such and this album shifts gears enough instrumentally to keep it interesting. lyrics still a strength here obv but they seem buried for a reason

No need to flex, Noler. Lol I don't care about your ratings. I say what I said purely because a hip hop fan that is even aware of "90% of hip hop" knows that plenty of shit as good or better than this has happened and is still happening. This is a great record but saying it's a masterpiece compared to NINETY percent of hip hop while simultaneously giving it a 3.0 looks disingenuous and ignorant.

the hh community loves earl and would more or less agree with noler
at minimum this has one of the highest consensus receptions of the year in the genre

I think the hh community would agree a lot more with this sentiment than anything Noler's said on this page.

I wish I liked Earl more. His flow sounds too stoned most of the time for me. It's like he can only just find the effort to articulate his words.
I've listened to this a solid dozen times now and honestly cannot tell you a single song or one from it.

His "too-stoned" flows are pretty unique to this album though, and tbh I think he pulls it off really well. I'd say he's a lot more vocally dynamic/energetic on Doris and especially IDLS.

slow and stoned sounding or not he still pronounces his words well which is one of the main reasons he's considered to have one of the best flows of active rappers
in fact going about it slow gives him the ability to do just that, proper pronunciation
weird criticism

There's nothing wrong with a slow flow - one of my favorite MC's MF DOOM has one of the most measured and paced flows ever. What I mean with a "too-stoned" flow is that Earl has some awesome lyrics - but you wouldn't know that from just listening. he doesn't really sound like he cares about the words he's saying. An awesome line means nothing when given no space to breathe, or no emotion given when spoken.
