I'm slightly worried about it...filtering his RYM 2018 ratings and he only has about 25 albums rated 4+

Lol, yeah idk if this is quite top 10 but it's not too far off. Who knows, I could dislike it again on the next listen.
We have to have our disagreements from time to time Doof, we can't just be clones.

Powerful.

Boney - we always have healthy disagreements, it's what it's all about
'only has about 25 albums rated 4+'
Respect to him, I'm quite a loose bitch this year - I'm trying to hold back on the 4 ratings but I'm already over 50 and still picking up more...I tried to have a cull dammit

I'd argue October has been the worst month for music, with nothing remotely interesting coming until the last week.

Well I only have 25 or so at that level but I’ve only heard like 90 total so I’m not being that strict lol. Some of those 4s will probably drop as I revisit them at the year’s end though.
|
| |
Oh shit, I didn't notice that it was only from 2018.
Ok, not powerful anymore.

October was alright:
Daughters, Anna & Elizabeth, Thom Yorke, Colter Wall, Cloud Nothings, Viagra Boys, the Will Oldham is a comp of self covers but solid enough - some of the best of the year in that lot
Plus you have this which is a big release I concede

You guys listen to so much new music, it’s insane. I’m still catching up. I have 6 4s from ‘18 & nothing higher but I’ve only heard 44 releases, still that’s probably quite a ‘strict’ ratio compared to most.
|
| |
Not strict enough.

I feel like you guys listen to music just to hate it. Whatever floats ur boat though.
|
| |
Hey, only I do that!
|
| |
Na I do it too. Gotta pad them low digits for that objectivity % somehow and I cant with a good conscience rate something without hearing it front to back first.

Not sure about that argument - you can't like everything
I have 4.5'd a Holter album in the past - was always going to try this, plus it's in the top 20 most acclaimed/most hyped albums of the year. To not listen to it if you're into music generally would be a bigger statement than trying it out even if you have reservations.

Music is relative, how can I appreciate the genuinely good stuff if everything ‘rules’? Over time you become fussier, you realise what really has that special staying power & you filter out the less impactful releases. The threshold can be raised.
When I award a 3 it’s genuinely good music, flawed/inconsistent but enjoyable nonetheless, then it goes up from there. 4 or ‘excellent’ isn’t overly common for me, that doesn’t mean I think anything below this rating is trash, just my own personal adjustment that seems to makes sense. I genuinely don’t listen to anything I know will be terrible.

some 3.5's may end up in my TOP 10 of the year lol that's how fucking picky i've become.
inb4 3.5 is a pretty damn good score

I do listen to stuff I expect to be terrible because it's frequently hilarious
'Serious' albums like this I don't try because I think they'll be terrible though
