Settling on a 4. I've come to the following conclusions:
1) It's definitely one of their most understated albums, but there's real beauty to be found beneath the surface.
2) The album doesn't really get going until the second half; best stretch is tracks 8-12.
3) I'll Still Destroy You is in the top 10 songs The National have written.
4) Turtleneck is good for the album's pace but as a standalone song kind of sucks.
5) It's a grower to a point, but it will never have the emotional ceiling that High Violet possessed or the immediacy of Trouble Will Find Me.
Last but not least, if history is any indicator, I will 5 this by year's end and will disagree with any criticisms above because The National are perfect and I'm just too stupid to see it right now.

How is TWFM immediate it's so molassasy and slow.

"The album doesn't really get going until the second half"
Day I Die, System..
what i'm really loving about it is that it seems like The National finally taking a break from being so 'understated.' a lot of these songs have a real gut-punch to them that their subtler work on Boxer, HV couldn't really grasp by their nature. not to belittle those albums of course. but man these guitarrrs

When the album gets going is up to opinion whether you prefer their rock side or more contemplative, slow side, which is more the second half.

Backing up the SSFDL love
And TWFM was not even remotely immediate for me, I was disappointed with that album when it was released

That closing track needs more love. I didn't realise how much I needed a song like that by them. Berninger's vocals and lyrics are a match made in heaven for a soundscape like that. I'm a fanboy, I admit, but there's not chance that won't be my SOTY.
Enjoying reading the discussion here though. I really thought this was their most immediate/obvious album since Alligator, and the first time they've come close to capturing some of the dynamics of their live show on record. Interesting to see other people having the opposite reaction!
