Granted I trust user sites more for quality than I do review sites these days.

I edited my comment, read funny before. Yeah user sites are brutally honest, you can't always trust aggregators like wikipedia critic sections and rotten tomatoes.

For example That's the Spirit by Bring me the Horizon was universally loved by critics, what does that tell you.

I don't really agree with what you're saying about people justifying a shit album as a grower, butcher. Some albums legitimately take time to sink in. I liked this album from the get-go, but I'm getting a better feel for the tracks I wasn't massive on. And though my opinion on the album hasn't altered much, I appreciate it a lot more after about 30 more spins.

Some publications are, eh, 'obliged' to give favourable reviews. If you are publishing a three page interview with Josh Homme you aren't going to crap on the latest album.

This had a 3.06 rating on rym just a few days ago with 200+ ratings but it seems to be rising.

RyM is way more critical than this site, so I would translate a 3.1 to around a 3.5 here.

Yeah Doof it seems to me a lot of reviewers are being manipulated by the creators of the film or album to give a positive spin, or to only feature and publicize positive reviews, especially in this era of the Internet.

These kinds of sites are much better than review publications:

1. Because we get the perspective of hundreds/thousands of different people rather than from one.

2. We don't hang out with the people we are critiquing.

Yeah I bet reviewers who interview and hang out with the artists get biased and feel like they're part of the music world, so why look at something negatively when you can stay in that space and keep feeling part of it.

it's also at least partially a result of Homme's hard work.. he's earned past praise and can now cruise on critical momentum until and if it gets painfully obvious that the work is inferior..

besides, the praise for this album is the dividend of why they went with this direction in the first place.. make a pop album, it will be liked..

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but it's like making a really artful, less accessible album that everyone ends up loving and praising (...Like Clockwork), then following up that ambition and emotional resonance with a much lighter, more accessible and poppy affair, (this), to the approval of the newfound attention and love they got before.

Going too far into moodier and introspective territory would get tiresome and indulgent to the mainstream, not commercial enough for the record label and general public, so this is the perfect move for QotSA to make after something like ...Like Clockwork.

Queens do get a bit of the "Radiohead" treatment (granted nowhere near as much) with reviewers.

I'm realizing that Coldplay parallel this: after the ambition of their best and more diverse art rock album Viva La Vida, 3 years later they returned with the mainstream pop bombast of Mylo Xyloto.

That is also a very common thing that happened to bands of the 70s and 80s. Especially between, say, their debut album and their sophomore album.

Also, Homme is in a good mood these days and hasn't died since the LC days so that explains the upbeat nature of the album.
