"I'd argue film has much more nuance than music, so you're right, they are very different"
But most films are very easy to resonate with whereas even popular music can be hard to resonate with if you aren't familiar with the genre. I'm not going to pretend like I can explain this shit off the top of my head, or pull out a dictionary, but from what I can tell a lot of enjoyment in music comes from being able to recognize patters in music, rises and lows(verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus etc) and that can take multiple listens to appreciate and even can get better with time.

That's because widespread film releases cost upwards of $60mil and, since there's so much money at stake, they are designed to resonate on some level (depending on genre) with as many people as possible

yeah the financial stakes are higher for film, definitely
that being said several filmmakers have been granted a ton of freedom over the course of the last 70 years, and decent film is only getting less expensive to generate

Couldn't disagree more, film has so much more depth than music when done properly, watch a Kurosawa film and read up on some of the cinematography techniques, shot choices, color choices, need for more and less dialogue in certain scenes and you'll realize film should have much more reserve in judgement compared to music. Music is only one sense, hearing, film utilizes so much more, and if anything, I feel like you can more easily come to like or dislike music more easily than a film, which objectively had much more layers and nuance.

Even films like Barry Lyndon I hated for the longest time but only in the last five or so years have I appreciated the brilliance of it.

but @JWT most filmmakers don't create their own soundtracks or do their own sound design. the visual and written elements tend to take most of their attention. while film offers the most potential for a complete, rich piece of art, very few films make the most of their sonic accompaniments. i love film to death but viewing it from that perspective - at least for now - doesn't make sense to me

This whole point about movies or music being more complex or less complex is stupid and i never tried to imply one or the other

ALA's right though, familiarity play a huge role in music, more so than it does in film
