in all fairness, the rev is half the drummer of brooks or portnoy....they both made this band better

portnoy is a godly drummer, prolly one of the best of all time, but the rev had such a fun way of playing that was so satisfying.
maybe im biased cause he was one of the reasons I took up gtr and drums

But they can't write songs like The Rev could. He brought some of the best songs to life, such as Afterlife and A Little Piece of Heaven

Plus that double ride cymbal work The Rev did was the knees of the bees

It's plesantly quiet sure but that doesn't necessarily make it well produced. I don't like the mix, the bass guitar comes and (mostly) goes, and the drums sound annoying to me. I bought the cd on release date (god bless my beloved store), no low quality rip here.

Great album and stuff

No, The Rev was far better than both of them and had far more natural talent. The only reason Brooks or Portnoy arguably had more technical skill was due to years of additional playing which if the Rev were still alive, he would have easily passed them up in around five years or so. The Rev had said technical ability, plus a high octane performance style that brought just about every one of his songs to life. I'm not even going to get into his knack for engaging songwriting.

lol, spoken (ridiculously, i may add) like a true fan.....but no, both are superior drummers and Portnoy for sure is a great songwriter as pre-2003 Dream Theater clearly proves

2 (out of only 3 releases) of Avenged's best albums have been written without The Rev

They're back on the right path anyway. This album sounds like a honest first attempt to really reach new heights. If they can master this new direction, things will get really interesting
