Yeah, it's not the most subtle of homages...
I kinda figure that in the break between permanent vocalists, they obviously went for Patton on the joint E.P because he suited their style, so it was natural that he should leave a lasting impression, and that comes out in the songwriting as much as the vocal style for me.
But agreed it is fairly brazen.
