I've been going on a big Thrice binge lately. Fucking love this band.
The chorus of Hurricane is so fantastic. Dammit Dustin is amazing.

I kind of get the comments about sub par lyrics (by Thrice standards) on this, but I find that most of the time they definitely flirt with corniness but ultimately come off as earnest. Of course this is preferential but I really feel the melancholy of Hurricane and The Long Defeat, the human longing of Stay With Me, the pure frustration and angst of Blood on the Sand, etc...
I agree with this. Some lyrics are a bit on the nose certainly, but even Blood on the Sand I think is validated by Dustin's vocal delivery -- the issue might be more the chorus melody. Again, Death From Above I think is made better (as is Black Honey) for how fatty the lyrics and ever. The music is less delicate and nuanced, and the lyrics/melodies are clunkier... there's something I like, strangely, about how deliberate and simple the punch your face parts are.
Unlike Death From Above, which I think actually has some really excellent lines, 'Whistleblower' is probably the most cringe-y for me. Interesting concept, juvenile execution. The rest of the songs? I can't really make out or remember the lyrics, so in that regard, they don't make me cringe.
Either way, I don't think the album is shitty from a lyrical perspective. What are the specifics that people find stupid?

Whistleblower, as you said, is incredibly juvenile and just takes such a one-sided stance on everything. God-awful song
for the rest; it's not as if I find the perspectives stupid, exactly, just the way they're represented with the lyrics. Black Honey is the exception, I feel it has a cool metaphor that represents the idea of the song very well, but for the rest of the political songs on here it just all seems heavy-handed and not so well executed. "There's a gun in your hand or there might as well be" for example is the most blatant "make your audience feel bad to get their sympathy" line I've heard in sometime, and as you said when you combine that kind of thing with subpar choruses (which a lot of this album suffers from; Blood, Stay With Me, Wake Up all have incredibly lazy and listless chorus melodies) it kind of drags it down into the muck

I hear you. I genuinely haven't really paid much attention to the lyrics to the other songs. The 'gun in the hand' line is definitely the worst one on the album.

"The 'gun in the hand' line is definitely the worst one on the album."
It's not the greatest line but if you really think that's the worst one here then...
...you've gotta wake up

I thought the gun in the hand line was fine. About to jam this again and pay more attention to it. Right now, I'd say it's maybe 3-3.5/5.

The lyrics on Whistleblower are definitely too simplistic for their own good but instrumentally it's one of my faves here. That outro is superb.
The Window is still best though

If anyone can guess my fave Thrice song they get a cookie, it's off Beggars.
