So, it turns out I don't love this because I really dislike Then Again and, given how much I dislike it, it's positioned in one of the worst places. Perhaps it'll grow on me.

yeah that's my least favorite too. a bit too fun, doesn't match the mood, and the opening lyrics make me cringe a bit

Yeah, it fits so awkwardly between Cadmium and Aphasia. True! As soon as he sings, "I was totally nervous to go to Japan," I want to turn off the album. Shame because I think the rest is all fantastic.

yeah not a great line mostly because of the "totally" but as the song goes along it definitely gets better imo. just not up to par with the tracks before it and after it

I like the acoustic version better but the "do you wanna die...." part is so good on this album.

What are your favourites lyrically Ben? I'd go with the obvious Cadmium and Size of the Moon, so far. But those are also the most ambitiously structured, so they're not subtle choices at all.

Thats a hard one, its a meticulously put together album in terms of lyrics I find, so many double meanings and fascinating expressions throughout it.
I'd agree, those two are pretty much the most ambitious and brilliant for it, though there is so much going on in Cadmium that it can be a hard listen sometimes. It does have some wonderful lines in it though. For instance 'You'll hook my eye I'll spur' as a way to describe attraction to someone in an impressively short amount of words and with lots of detail and character (that moment someone makes eye contact across the room, and kind of hinting at the feelings that stir your inside or spur you to act on it). And stuff like 'walking with my neck out' being a wonderful way, in my opinion, of expressing being bold and confident and yourself, whilst at the same time expressing the vulnerability of such a situation.
Size of the Moon and Old Friends are probably my 2 lyrical favourites. Whilst Old Friends is quite 'on the nose' and obvious with a lot of what its saying I love the particular words and phrasing he went for. Plus personally I find that to be the most relatable.
Aphasia is also fantastic with its double meaning throughout, referring to the condition of Aphasia (the inability to communicate) and then personifying it as a intimate relationship. Aspects of it could be taken literally, especially the last para, but as a whole its interesting in its interweaving of ideas.
In conclusion, half of this is gold haha.

yeah great stuff man. Aphasia hits me the hardest lyrically though. so damn heartbreaking but just the right amount of hope that it's uplifting.
also the you'll hook my eye i'll spur line is my favorite along with the "i hung behind your eyes"

We've been talking about Broca's aphasia in my linguistics class and I can't help but think about this whenever it comes up.

I actually really love Then Again. Its the weakest song here by comparison to the strength of the other 7 songs, but its a fantastic slice of energetic pop rock to add to the albums diversity. My only real issue with it is its placement. It reminds of of The Obituaries by The Menzingers in that way.
