Morningrise all the way. This is easily 2nd, though.

Morningrise is 5th for me, but still an easy 4.5 hard.

Morningrise and Orchid are closer to the bottom for me (granted, I still have them both at a 4/5 because Opeth is just that awesome), but it's because I feel as though their sound was still a bit embryonic and not fully developed until this album

Kinda like SBG for Death

Disagreed hard (obviously). I love the more melodic, contrapuntal style of those two albums. Plus the songwriting of Morningrise is just so directly raw and emotional. The later stuff feels chunkier, bulkier, more polished, and ultimately just less exciting (though still great mostly)

"I feel as though their sound [on their first two albums] was still a bit embryonic and not fully developed until this album"
I completely agree, yet I still consider Morningrise to be one of their best albums. Objectively this album showed a marked improvement over the previous two, which were very disjointed (particularly Morningrise) and lacked cohesiveness but I feel that unpolished feel gave them a certain charm. I still think this album is a significant improvement on both and definitely prefer it but I wouldn't begrudge anyone for saying Morningrise was their favourite Opeth even though I can agree with the criticisms that some might throw at it.

I agree with Ocean to an extent. I love Orchid and Morningrise, despite neither in my top 5 albums by this band, they both possess a raw, organic quality that make them special.
Orchid in particular is very unique and different to anything else that came out at the time. Song structures and chord progressions were used so effectively on Orchid, being occultish and influenced by bm and European folk music. It was a real game changer for metal music, though that could be said for any of their first 5 albums really.

the first two records just set themselves apart in terms of sheer complexity and experimentation (at least in regard to metal music), such that they're the two i'm most inclined to listen to lately. the next three and beyond are practices in an entirely different art form, really

Agreed, this is an amazing transition album to the masterpieces SL and BwP.

Too many factors to rank the first 4. All are classics in their own right.
