That would be the case if Dream Theater was still be putting out albums like Scenes and Awake, but that isn't the case anymore...

Native Construct was the band that saved my summer holidays last year, along with Beardfish. Too complex, but once you learn the songs, it's heaven.

All life's meaning can be found in that mini saxophone solo they have.

"I'll never understand how Rudess manages to get tones that sound like a $300 casio out of $3000 boards."
Hahaha, laughed so hard at that!!! Was just listening to Brother Can You Hear Me with this awkward pseudo-trumpet-synth in the beginning, so true.

not so sure thats Jordan.....didn't they bring in an orchestra?
|
| |
Album Rating: 2.0
Yes they did, but I highly doubt that's the orchestra. The tone is cut off too abruptly to come frome real wind instruments.

they can alter it however they want! i'd be surprised actually if that was Jordan

Album Rating: 2.0
Sure, but what sense would it make to alter it this way? It just sounds not natural to me. I'd be surprised if this wasn't Jordan.

Man this was one long and mostly tedious listen. Some good songs and inspired moments burried under a barrage of sappy autopilot ballads and rock opera-like failures. For the first time I truly felt that DT is just practically phoning in and going through the motions.
Tried my best, but this one lost my attention quickly.

Heard half of the album, nothing managed to get my attention.
That said, Labrie sounds better regarding the previous two albums, and the same goes for the overall sound.

I don't think they're phoning it in but rather trying something different and not nailing it by playing too safe and being too ambitious. Agreed that you could cut an hour out of this and leave the more creative/new bits in and this would probably be a 4 or even 4.5.
Got tickets to see this live, not sure if I'll buy the actual album. They'll probably use that horrible CGI from the trailer for the performance backdrop *shudders* but the music will be cool.
"Labrie sounds better regarding the previous two albums" [2] You can hear where they used obvious computer correction at parts though.

"trying something different and failing by playing it too safe and being too ambitious."
this is like a triple oxymoron

All that said, looking forward to new Haken and Fates Warning this year for my prog/metal fixes.
"this is like a triple oxymoron " Hahah yeah I realized it after I wrote it. They don't challenge themselves creatively enough but wrote too much material at the same time, is what I mean.

well, not sure about that. it's more energetic, that's definite. Begin Again, on the other side is atrocious. Jingle bells and shit.
