See the thing with fantano and this site is that when his review rolls in, the average rating tends to shift in the favor of whatever rating he gave, even if it's just by a tenth of a point

that's pretty normal tbh, I don't think Fantano is to blame.

I don't care for him and as many reviews as he rolls out, I really don't think he ever listens to albums.. not in full at least. If you notice, you can listen to his reviews and pull up a pitchfork review in another tab and they're very similar. I think he bases a lot of stuff off of what he reads honestly. He and I think similarly very seldom.

Surprisingly, I actually agreed with his review.. But it was more of just what I had said earlier: the lack of sonic diversity from the genre.

Although I would've given it a light 7 rather than a light to decent 5.

Honestly, you cannot possibly listen to as much albums as Fantano does AND review them in-depth. I also think that he bases some of his opinions on p4k.

idk, i like fantano quite a bit

ftr, his review is fine in this specific case, it's clear that he listened to it enough, he's just not that into pop punk clearly. people will get butthurt tho

yeah he's into hip-hop and experimental rather than rock/metal, although he did like that new Cattle Decapitation album

As much as I disagree with fantano on many of his reviews and ratings I can't help but be attracted to his humor and personality, he seems like a cool dude despite his opinions being far off from mine.

I also rarely agree with Fantano but despite that enjoy watching his reviews because I think he talks very eloquently about music. My issue in this case is that he clearly doesn't like pop punk (which is fine) but I'm not sure why he bothers reviewing albums in a genre he doesn't care for. Maybe his subscribers pushed him into it or whatever but still, if he knew anything about pop punk he'd see that The Wonder Years are pretty much at the apex of the genre and deserving of a higher rating than a 5/10. I'm not sure it's a genre in which you can bring much new to the table at this point, and originality is pretty much his sole criteria for reviewing everything.

"...but I'm not sure why he bothers reviewing albums in a genre he doesn't care for."

This is something that generally irks me to no end. I'm all for listening to something that's not your style cause, hey, who the hell knows, you may like it. But to actually review an album you dislike that is in a genre you dislike, in is very unfair to the artist. Your viewpoint is already biased and you are telling the public basically "don't listen to this, it sucks" and screwing the band out of potential fans because you happen to dislike the genre associated them.

I'm not a fan of drone at all for example. So, I would never review a drone album as A. I'd have no idea what i'm talking about and B. Its unfair to artist because I don't know what the fanbase of that genre is looking for /rant

thats sorta fair but he does say in the review that he doesn't dislike the genre as a whole, just that a lot of new releases dont impress him

tbh besides that fairly small complaint idk how you can dislike his reviews. hes always eloquent, fair, funny, not annoying in any way, and covers a variety of styles
