Yeah, so this really got to me today. Out of nowhere and in the best way.

This’ll do that to ya.
I’m so happy this made the decade list. Can’t believe I wrote this review almost five years ago. Reading it now I do cringe at it - it’s very gushy (though this album warrants those kind of feelings) and filled with clichés. I have to wonder (selfishly) how much this review impacted that placement/the status of this album on this site in general, though this album’s reception elsewhere has also grown considerably in that time. Chan’s blurb made the point well, Isbell is practically a household name now but that didn’t happen all at once.

Not every track has sunk its claws into me yet but I get the feeling it'll eventually creep its way to 4.5/5 status

I can't think of any artist that writes about death as well as Isbell. Elephant, If We Were Vampires, Speed Trap Town . . . All beautiful and all heartbreaking

Relatively Easy's arrangement just hits right.

Got the new one a week early by ordering through an indie record store! Just finished my first listen, here are some basic initial thoughts:
Easily his best with the 400 Unit and I would probably say his best musically and vocally overall. A very complete sound. Normally I prefer the solo stuff because I think it lets his lyrics shine, but Reunions is by far the most cohesive record he's made. Lyrically it's as strong as ever, with the first two singles probably being the weakest, but they make up for it musically. Right now, I would rate it just below Southeastern, although that is subject to change

That is all very exciting to hear! I agree with the sentiment that I much prefer his past "solo" work to the stuff billed with the 400 Unit (even though there isn't really much difference between the two) so hopefully I will also enjoy this new one.

The songs I heard ruled. I only just got into Southeastern but I thought it sounded on par with it. Glad to hear that the whole album is as good!

This album is so amazing. A lot of time, when an album is a 'grower', it can mean that you're in for a lotta boring listens before things click. This is different. First listen, I'm smiling at the lines that stick out and enjoying the great melodies. A month or two later, you start realising how nearly every line is perfect, and it just captures you...

This embodies what modern country should be: more americana and folk, less pop.

"It is hard to say exactly what makes Southeastern so good. In fact, musically, it is not innovative at all."
Agreed. Amazing lyrics, but his vocals just don't work for me for some reason. This is a strong average for me, bordering on a 3.0. Also, this to me feels more like an indie folk record than country.
