"If you’re like me it’s been, well, five years. Which of course was when their last album, Recitation dropped to lukewarm reception. Yet this has always been the case with Envy, a band consistently on the back burner."
You gave "Recitation" a 4. Hardly lukewarm, in fact the 4 makes it "excellent" by Sputnik's standards. You also gave "All The Footprints You've Ever Left And The Fear Expecting Ahead" a 4.5 ("Superb"). What did Envy do in the last 5 years to make you hate them so much?
"Envy never cease to impress"

This album sort of has an up-down feeling for me. It's like the best part of the album is in the middle, where the first two songs build up to greatness and the last few sort of fizzle out, leaving the outstanding tracks-in my opinion the excellent triumvirate of "Shining Finger", "Ticking Time and String" and "Footsteps in the Distance". What makes me lower the overall rating a little is the grating vocal delivery-that is, the harsher style. The cleaner, more sorrowful vocal tones (and especially the narrative pieces) are well-refined and contribute greatly to the accompanying musicianship, which is the main reason why the aforementioned songs are favourite cuts from the album. There are moments of musical beauty here too.

i love this band, but the harsh vocals need a change man. so monotone. and he uses the same syllable patterns in like every song ever i swear.

this is def the best thing and heaviest thing they've done since a dead sinking story.

Eh I like everything they've done for different reasons, but this one definitely shows more urgency then the past couple of albums. A good mix of the old and the new.

yea so have I. I get bored with insomniac doze though. Footsteps in the distance is turning into one of my favorite songs by them.

I think I'm going to make a mixed playlist of Abyssal and their splits with Thursday and Jesu and pretend it's another album.

There was one but it was taken down. It was full of hyperbole though so a better one would be nice.
