I'm completely at ease, and I have the furthest thing a pretentious reign. And I said I think this is a great record, so umm what?

@Tuna: Yea but these days we're generally pretty lucky if an entire year has more than 3 4.5's

Pink Floyd may have shown us the dark side of the moon but Kendrick's busy showing the dark side of the ghetto

To Pimp a Butterfly is the album that Kendrick Lamar needed to make after GKMC. His sound is evolving just as his stature within rap culture is. His earlier albums focused on the small-scale: Compton, surviving the way he grew up, and coming out the other side a loyal-to-his-roots success story. Butterfly embraces Kendrick's newly found role, but it comes with some drawbacks. It is far less consistent than is predecessor, and at 16 tracks there is a hefty percentage of songs that simply hold back the album's momentum. It also lacks some of Good Kid's rawness and sense of humor, as Lamar's tone has shifted from storytelling to preaching. Despite some flaws though, Butterfly is still great in most ways. Kendrick is on point lyrically, and the production is superb - far outweighing GKMC's backdrop. Also, given the recent controversy and racial tension that has been all over the news lately, it's perfectly reasonable for Butterfly to take on an even more significant meaning to many Americans. But personal attachment aside, this is a sure-footed follow up to Good Kid that cements K.L.'s status as a (if not the) top tier rapper of our generation.

Edit: Sorry, meant for this to be a soundoff, but I'll leave it here anyway for people to read as I feel it sums up my opinion on Butterfly. This is based on about 3-4 days of listening, so it's still subject to some minor change. At this moment it's probably my 3rd favorite album of the year, with Father John Misty and The Decemberists holding 4.0 ratings.

nah sowing i agree 16 songs is a lot, but i think there's no lack of sense of humor, ("BOOBOO", "WAS THA YAMS- THE YAMS AR DA POAWS TAT B", all of For Free etc. etc.) Lack of consistency. Hmm, well, I think the only bad song is You Ain't Gotta Lie, but then other people really like that one. So, that's that. But yeah it's long. I don't think there is preachiness here, not really, but sure the spoken word poem thing can be jarring. Some parts of Mortal Man can also be maybe.

something about good kid, maad city i listen to with rose-tinted glasses though, just love that album and can't help comparing the highs of that to this

What's funny is that in 20 years this will, in all likelihood, be looked at as one of the greatest hip-hop record of the 21st century. If not the greatest.

In other words, don't be the critics from the 80's who said Blade Runner was just "alright"
