Another underrated Decemberists album. This shit rules.

This is half a good album. Some vintage Decemberists tunes on here but I felt it was wildly inconsistent. However, I think I need to re-evaluate it after I'll Be Your Girl (woof). Lake Song, Make You Better, Cavalry Captain are all fantastic songs. But it really fizzles out halfway through.
I honestly fell off them hard after King is Dead. Felt like they had said all they needed to and it was around that time that Colin Meloy got wrapped up in his Wildwood series so all his storytelling went into that and the band just reverted to indie pop.

I disagree extremely hard bro. Give it another go!

It's sort of a King is Dead pt. 2, not as consistent but some seriously excellent highs. I generally agree that they fell off after this though, and As It Ever Was was an okay attempt at a return to form but it didn't really stick for me long term.

That I can agree with. I love The King is Dead and this one seems like a continuation for sure. I will be jamming the last two albums soon then I'll be done with their discog.

Oh I forgot you're doing a discog run. What's your favorite album so far?

The Crane Wife is nearly a 5 for me and Picaresque isn't far behind! Also think Her Majesty is super underrated and my third fav.

Nice. The Crane Wife is damn near perfect and was my favorite Decemberists album for a long time until TKID came along.

TKID is definitely fourth for me. I really enjoy all of their atuff though. Such a great band.

Picaresque is their best album in my opinion. It was the first album of theirs I listened to and I was at an age where I had never heard storytelling used so well in a song. All of Picaresque are micro stories and they're all funny, sad, and beautiful. I feel like people really overlook Hazards of Love too. It's imperfect for sure but it takes balls to do an indie rock opera like that. Crane Wife is magical and Her Majesty and Castaways are classics in their own right. I cried often when listening to California One/Youth and Beauty Brigade. I could talk about this band all day.

Well said bro, and agreed hard, Hazards rules. It's my "least" fav of theirs, but still great.

This getting bumped made me listen to THE two albums of my summer of 2015 today... this being one of them and the other being DGD Instant Gratification. I must have spun each of them 50 times driving to and from my intern job at a light bulb manufacturing plant in the middle of nowhere Ohio.
