Going to a few gigs next month, one of which is Devin Townsend Project. Only heard a few tracks here and there by Devin, any opinions on the shows?

what the fuck bro get prepping
never seen him live but from what i hear he is top quality. hopefully he will keep a few songs from the setlist from the fan-chosen albert hall concert one cause there were some absolute gems on there...all his albums are great so just pick a few that take your fancy from them to listen to. this is the only really boring one imo

Have to admit I'm not the biggest fan of DT Project, but I can dig albums like Ocean Machine. That said it's a live show, I'm confident the sound will have a bigger breath than in studio versions.

Don't really get how people think ZTO was more "musical-centric" and Z2 more music-centric. I mean, ZTO has like, combined 4 minutes of dialogue instead of the onerous amount of babbling on Z2. I admit, at first I thought ZTO was a hit-or-miss curiosity, but after listening to it a lot I think it's one of Devin's best albums period. Z2:DM is just bloated and way overwrought.
Sky Blue, while not one of my favorites, is really pretty amazing. I've never heard such a melding of metal tones and pop-like melodies. Maybe this is cheesy, but I dig it mostly for what a bizarro Devin is... but I actually do dig it. "Fallout" is probably the catchiest song the guy's ever written, which is saying something.

I wish Devin would stop using the choirs and orchestras and go back to just his own vocals and production techniques.

i wish his guitars didn't sound like they'd been stripped of all life
like seriously you know you've ruined the mastering when the first ziltoid album sounds more muscular than Dark Matters, such a lifeless sound to the album. dude needed to raise the guitars in the mix and maybe actually let them breath. Devin's never been the best with guitars but on stuff like Alien at least they have some cut to them, this just is a sort of muffled thud.

idk about Dark Matters but Sky Blue is really really good.

Where "wall of sound" is a positive term when referring to his old works, I would say "wall of sound" is also what's killing his newer material for me. Can't pick anything out in the mix just a big layered wall of too much going on.

Hope his choir and his Anneke get hit by a bus.

Guess his next album is going to hammer it home with the epicness, and choirs and orchestras according to Dev....

as long as it riffs more than Epicloud/this I'll be fine with that. The guy's gonna be around for forever so there's plenty of time for old man Devvy RIFFZz in the future.

I just want another album with his raw vocals, normal band members, and his own production effects like on Terria/Ocean Machine/Alien/Synchestra.
