Worst "prog" band? They're one of the worst bands of the past decade, full stop.

"What exactly did he write?"

Basically all the vocal melodies

Which is pretty awesome because those are some of the best in the band's catalogue along with stuff like The Killing Hand and A Fortune in Lies.

This would actually be listenable if Spencer were singing on it. Dude was probably just born when this was released but he still would've done a better job than Dominici.

His own music is unlistenable so I don't see him doing better with anyone else's.

At least he hitz the notez. So he's automatically better than Dominici.

Dominici's a fine vocalist though. It's not like he's Rod Tyler off the first Symphony X album.

Dominici might be a fine vocalist, but there's no recorded proof of it. Unless off-pitch, weak ass falsettos are considered fine vocals, in which case good performance on this is a classic.

"Dominici might be a fine vocalist"

No, not "might be". "Is".

Fine vocalist indeed. Which was why he got kicked out of this band who then made it huge. The world just wasn't ready for vocals that fine.

You mean the same lineup with which they gradually drifted into mediocrity after Awake?

The choice was to either start great and eventually drift into mediocrity or to start with mediocrity and eventually be used car salesmen.

They made the right choice.

And yet this album manages to be better than most, if not all, of the stuff following Awake. It's almost like they started great to begin with.

The alternate universe where this is better than Metropolis 2 and Six Degrees must be an interesting place. Send me a postcard.

Both albums are decent but they have a bunch of dull sections that don't come even close to being salvaged by LaBrie's performances or are just outright filler. This album doesn't have either of those issues and stuff like A Fortune in Lies, Afterlife and The Killing Hand is just as epic as the best of either two albums.

On the other hand this album would be decent if the vocalist had any power in his vocals and wasn't constantly and distractingly flubbing notes. But alas.

Is the sky still blue and the grass still green over there? Postcard!

I'd send one but I still didn't get yours from the alternate dimension where Periphery or The Contortionist released anything worth hearing.

Yeah, where I come from people actually value competence in their musicians. Weird, right?!
