Well, you know, I think so.
This might (I stress might) be more technically impressive, especially considering it's release date, but I get a muuuuuuch stronger emotional impact from TIA. And that's what music is all about to me, it's why my favorite album is what it is. Most emotionally impactful thing I've ever heard, regardless of whatever else. Traced in Air is number 2. Maybe "Veil of Maya" isn't a good representation of the album, but honestly, it doesn't sound like death metal to these ears. (maybe I should hear it again) That said, what I heard in that song sounded really original and interesting.

I think there's a strong undercurrent of death metal, but rather than the more bass-y, guttural end of things, it's more fluid and flighty. Really that doesn't do it much justice, Cynic's sound is a pretty tough thing to describe and that's part of what makes them so awesome.
