always been underwhelmed by everything this band has done, except pale folklore. this doesn't really change anything.

why would you do that? just think of all those hours you wasted

Well about 20 of those listens was before and leading up to my review of it.

To explain the others, I enjoy some parts of each track, but don't like others. For example, the first 8 or 9 minutes of "Black Lake Nidstang" is great but that electronic part just is mind-numbingly boring.

theyve not been good since ashes against the grain so idk why anyones really surprised. if you didnt like marrow you wont like this. if you liked marrow, youll like this. its like the same album with less terrible post rock and better production.

So I've just started my second listen. On first listen, I think I liked this a little less than I
liked Marrow on first listen. Up to Astral Dialogue I was really loving this album. Then Dark Matters
God came on and then the album was inconsistent as fuck for me. Celestial is awesome and Plateau is a
pretty sweet instrumental but Dark Matters God and Vales were dull as fuck for me. Especially Dark
Matters God, that might be the worst Agalloch song I've heard on first listen. Most of the acoustic
songs did nothing for me either, only enjoyed the closing one.

Still, I'm going to need a lot more listens to form a proper opinion of this thing. I hope it grows on
me...

Plateau of ages bugs me because it never really does anything interesting and for a 12+ minute track is has almost no sense of movement.

Agreed about Dark Matter Gods though, worst track on the album.

Plateau for me dragged a little towards the end but ended up being enjoyable. I absolutely loved Birth, that might be my early favourite so far. Astral is interesting as fuck too.

"Birth..." suffers from many of the same problems as Plateau imo, and that clean guitar at the end

comes off as amateurish.

will never understand why people didn't like marrow, especially when they complain about the production value and then turn around and praise a metal album with shit production

kyle: fair enough. i just assumed you were a masochist! :P what do you think of this overall?

what do you think of this overall?

I have yet to gather a really solid overall opinion but if I had to say now it's worse than Marrow if

only because it so emotionally and dynamically barren.

The thing with Marrow is that it's an Agalloch record through and through, to me this sounds like

another band entirely with the exception of "Celestial Effigy".

It's weird because I can see why you wouldn't like it but at the same time, I find it extremely hypnotic due to it's atmosphere and doom metal feel.

I wish this had better production though. It's better than Marrow but that isn't saying much. That was one of the things I didn't like about Marrow was it's weak production.

it wasnt that it was bad it just didnt fit. i mean i get they were going for organic but it just ended up sounding flat and only highlighted the fact that most of the riffs sucked.

Faustian echoes really got my hopes for this. Pretty much the only thing The Serpent and The Sphere did for me was actually make me like marrow more. Seriously, the biggest disappointment of 2014

I think this is happening to me as well but that's only because Marrow is more interesting (relatively speaking.. my 2.5 still stands for that).

I do enjoy Marrow a lot myself. Black Lake Nidstang is one of my favourite Agalloch songs.

The White is their most overlooked release. People don't talk about it a lot but it's in the same league as Ashes, if not all 3 of their first records.

Yeah Marrow had quite a lot of memorable parts, nothing here really stands out for me so far.
